| Silver Coins are coin items in Diddy Kong Racing and its Nintendo DS version. | |

| In the original Nintendo 64 release, every course has a Silver Coin Challenge, where the objective is to collect eight Silver Coins and win in first place. Many of the Silver Coins have a colorful N64 icon designed on the sides and are well hidden or located off-track. The player can only participate in a world's Silver Coin Challenges after winning against the world boss in a race, and every race course has their own minimum requirement of Golden Balloons needed to play the challenges. When the player's racer completes a Silver Coin Challenge, Taj awards them with a Golden Balloon. Completing the Silver Coin Challenge in all four courses of Dino Domain, Snowflake Mountain, Sherbet Island and Dragon Forest engages the player in a rematch against the world's boss to obtain a piece of the Wizpig amulet, and obtaining all four pieces leads up to a race with Wizpig himself. In Future Fun Land, completing the Silver Coin Challenge, plus obtaining all four pieces of the T.T. amulet, engages the player in one more race with Wizpig.
| | Silver Coins first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3, where they appeared out of thin air in certain spots for as long as a P-Switch was in effect. Silver Coins have the same value as standard Gold Coins, and are usually found in clusters. |

| In the remake, the Silver Coin Challenge has been replaced with Balloon Touch Challenges in Adventure Mode. The Silver Coin Challenges still exist in the single race mode, and are redesigned with a Rare symbol on the sides. They can be purchased from Taj's Wishes Menu. Each track's Silver Coin Challenge must be unlocked by completing its respective Balloon Touch Challenge. | | In Super Mario World, pressing a Silver P-Switch would turn all enemies in Silver Coins for a limited time. However, Silver Coins worked differently from standard coins in this game; if enough were collected, they would start racking up into extra lives, similar to jumping on numerous enemies in succession. In certain levels, a trick involving hordes of enemies and a Silver P-Switch can be executed to earn dozens of extra lives. |

| | They appear in New Super Mario Bros., having the same role as in Super Mario Bros. 3. They sometimes appear in a trail behind Invincible Mario in a few levels, like World 7-3. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, they reappear, this time with a deeper blue color, like Blue Coins, and when the player collects them all in a level before they disappear, the audience cheers. |
