Shifting Sands is the third course in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. It is a desert course that features a combination of expansive sand seas and rocky valleys. Ruins and cacti are found throughout the course, and its fairways are often bumpy or segmented. It has the fewest water hazards of any course in the game, only having one on the second hole in the form of an oasis. The course's name may be a reference to the "Shifting Sands", the enchanted deserts in L. Frank Baum's List of Oz books. It also bears superficial resemblance to Shifting Sand Land from Super Mario 64, being a desert area with ruins and Kleptos.

The Shifting Sands course is filled with many sand dunes and sand traps, along with some cracked ground that does not make the ball go far at all. Throughout the course, the player is taken through ruins, pyramids, cliffs, sphinxes, and a small water hole at hole fourteen, while Kleptos fly around once in a while. In the last few holes in the course, it becomes evening, at which time the winner is announced when everyone's done.

Tournament leaderboards
When playing in the Sands Classic, 29 other competitors will appear in the leaderboard at the end of each hole. The names consist of other playable characters, Mario characters, or generic nicknames. When playing in the Sands Star Classic, more names will be from Mario characters, and characters from other Mario series such as Paper Mario will appear, as well as characters from other Nintendo franchises such as The Legend of Zelda.

In Mario Pinball Land, Shifting Sands was one of the worlds Mario went to. Here, Mario fought Pokeys, Lakitu and his Spinies, and Kleptos. He also found King Tut's pyramid. In there, he went up against many Cobrats and Shy Guys (there were also two of Toad's Tents here, on the left and right sides). When Mario finally made it to the inner sanctum, he awakened King Tut himself and fought him. Using his magic against him, Mario defeated Tut and took his Star Key to move on.
