Rambi can use his horn to break open fragile walls, like what [[barrel]]s can do. He can defeat most enemies by moving into them, including [[Zinger]]s. Like other Animal Friends, if Rambi gets hit by a level hazard (such as [[Mincer]]s or flaming [[oil drum]]s), he runs away. Rambi is the first Animal Friend encountered, and he appears in the first level, [[Jungle Hijinxs (Donkey Kong Country)|Jungle Hijinxs]], and later appears in [[Oil Drum Alley]] and [[Manic Mincers]].

However, Rambi received the ability to perform a [[super move|supercharge]], which allows him to perform a fast charge to break open some walls (leading into [[bonus room]]s), or plow through enemies easily. Due to the introduction of [[Animal Barrel]]s, there are a few levels where [[Diddy Kong|Diddy]] and [[Dixie Kong|Dixie]] transform into Rambi, but there are still levels where they ride on him. Rambi appears in a few levels. Similarly to ''Donkey Kong Country'', the first time that Rambi is in the first level, [[Pirate Panic (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)|Pirate Panic]], right after the [[Star Barrel]]. From there, the Kongs can optionally ride him until they cross the [[No Animal Sign]]. Rambi reappears in ''[[Donkey Kong Country Returns]]'' and its [[Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D|Nintendo 3DS]] and [[Donkey Kong Country Returns HD|Switch]] ports as one of the two returning Animal Friends (the other one is [[Squawks the Parrot]]). Do note that "Animal Friend" is not a grouping in this game. [[Donkey Kong]] and [[Diddy Kong]] can ride Rambi, similarly to how they can in older ''Donkey Kong Country'' games; to do so, Donkey Kong must first free Rambi by [[Hand Slap|Ground Pounding]] or [[Roll Attack|Rolling]] into his large animal crate. Then they have to jump or land on top of Rambi.

Rambi does not have health in this game, being very close to outright invincible. Rambi destroys spikes, breaks open [[DK Barrel]]s, and defeats most enemies on contact. If enemies come from most angles, Rambi hops slightly to swings his horn at them. Enemies colliding from behind are defeated with a kick. Enemies that normally take multiple hits to defeat, like [[Tiki Doom]]s, are defeated in one hit. Even spiky enemies such as [[Tiki Zing]]s or enemies that block [[Barrel Roll]]s such as [[Tiki Tank]]s are defeated. Rambi can destroy stone objects, [[Cracked Block]]s, and other kinds of blocks showing an emblem of his face positioned above him or to his left or right, with a similar horn swing. Certain cracked stones are destroyed on contact, preventing Rambi from standing on them. The enemy rules further apply to Rambi's [[stomp]]s, meaning enemies otherwise immune to stomping are defeated by Rambi's stomps, and an enemy that can take more than one stomp from the Kongs is defeated in one stomp with Rambi. Rambi is not affected by slopes. The Kongs can dismount Rambi with the same button used for [[grab]]bing, with an "down" input required as well if the player is using D-Pad controls. Rambi quickly comes to a stop when dismounted while on the ground, but as he retains momentum in the air the player can drop Rambi onto bouncy flowers or enemies to extend Rambi's movement. In the latter case, Rambi's stomps still count towards chains that generate [[Banana Coin]]s and [[Red Balloon]]s.

When Rambi is not being ridden, he does continue to break spikes and fall through rocks Rambi cannot stand on. He also attacks enemies. He cannot break rocks from any direction that is not down, even if they are rocks that Rambi cannot stand on, rebounding from them as per normal movement rules should Rambi collide with rocks at a running speed. All other obstacles phase through Rambi.

Rambi has some moves of his own that can be used while riding him. He can [[Hand Slap|Ground Pound]] with his front legs, which has all the normal effects of a Ground Pound with the additional effect of breaking stone blocks showing an emblem of Rambi's face. Rambi can also [[Charge (Donkey Kong Country series)|Charge]], a rushing attack that is his equivalent of the [[Kong Roll]]. He can even jump out of a Charge like a [[Roll Jump]]. Rambi cannot grab, [[crouch]] or [[blow]], and neither can the Kongs while riding him. While riding Rambi, Diddy's [[Barrel Jet]] can only hover for one second.

Rambi's only weaknesses are fire and heat, including flaming enemies such as [[Flaming Tiki Buzz]]es and [[Fireball (Tiki)|Fireballs]]. If the player takes damage while riding Rambi, normally only possible because it is from one of these sources, the player loses Rambi. Note that Rambi is not additional protection from damage, the player still loses a [[health Meter|heart]]. Rambi does not flinch like Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong do, though he does still get mercy invincibility. Rather, he starts walking away aimlessly, turning at walls and falling off ledges. This is similar to [[Yoshi]], but Rambi is slower. There is a random chance that Rambi turns around when he starts walking. Rambi also walks away if fire touches Rambi while he is not being ridden, but never turns around before starting to do so. If he is already walking, Rambi always turns around as well. Unlike earlier ''Donkey Kong Country'' games, and also like Yoshi, the player can ride Rambi again to regain control of him. [[Lava]] is a special case. While Rambi only takes damage from lava, the lack of protection means the player usually is defeated by riding into lava anyway.

Rambi's position in a level is remembered even if he is off screen or the player enters a transition to another room. Rambi cannot be taken into [[Bonus room]]s, but the game keeps track of if the player enters one with Rambi and has the Kongs ride Rambi when exiting if that is true. Rambi vanishes on contact with the [[Slot Machine Barrel]] that concludes each level.

Rambi first appears in the third level, [[Tree Top Bop]]. He appears in a total of four levels, the other three being: [[Temple Topple]], [[Precarious Plateau]], and [[Smokey Peak]]. Rambi is outright required in Temple Topple and Smokey Peak, with crates positioned across the stage so that Rambi is easily accessible. The remaining two levels can be completed without Rambi, though hidden areas can require his abilities. Crates are less common in those levels. Rambi is part of the [[Volcano (world)|Volcano]]'s [[List of extras in Donkey Kong Country Returns|diorama]].

By entering it, Donkey Kong transforms into Rambi, which is required for him to obtain a [[Golden Banana]]. Rambi can move around quickly and easily defeat [[Gnawty]] enemies just by making contact with them; he is also invulnerable to damage. Rambi can destroy the nearby wooden huts and a stone barrier with his face on it. If Rambi goes out of bounds, he transforms back into Donkey Kong. Rambi is also controlled in one of Donkey Kong's [[Hideout Helm]] challenges, where the goal is to defeat 18 [[Kritter]]s while avoiding the electrical pylons which will turn Rambi back into Donkey Kong. Rambi is featured in his own unlockable mode named [[Rambi Arena]], which, like the [[Enguarde Arena]], can be unlocked after the Kongs have taken photographs of six [[Banana Fairy|Banana Fairies]]. ==Notes==
*While Rambi himself does not appear in the ''[[Saturday Supercade]]'' episode "[[Hairy Parent]]" (due to the show predating ''Donkey Kong Country'' by roughly a decade), the climax of said episode involves Donkey Kong riding an ill-tempered rhino in a similar fashion that looks not unlike Rambi.
*Although Rambi never appeared in the [[Donkey Kong Country (television series)|animated series]], he was featured in a commercial for the Game Boy Color remake of the original ''Donkey Kong Country'' video game that featured Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, [[General Klump]], and [[Krusha]] in their designs from the show's third season, with Rambi presented in a very similar style.
