Rainbow Ride is the fifteenth and final main course in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. The entrance to the course is located to the right of Tick Tock Clock's, in a small room above a ledge. The player has to jump onto a high platform in order to reach it. The entrance itself is a small hole in the floor.

Rainbow Ride is the fifteenth and last course in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. In Japan and Korea, the course is known as Rainbow Cruise. It is accessible in the highest room in Princess Peach's Castle, which also contains the gate to Tick Tock Clock. Unlike most courses in the game, Rainbow Ride is not entered through a painting, but through a hole in a niche opposite to that of Wing Mario Over the Rainbow.
To get around the course, there are several magic carpets that move along rainbow rails when the player steps onto them. The player starts on a platform next to a magic carpet, which moves in a bend around a platform and through a flamethrower. The platform has a ring of coins with an Amp circling above them. The magic carpet falls off its rail at four large spinning platforms with a Lakitu flying over them. Here, the path splits in three directions: To the left are swings, forward is a large concrete maze, and to the right is another magic carpet.

Rainbow Ride is a level with very little backtracking, and offers different paths around the level to different Power Stars, which makes it possible for Mario to collect them in any order he desires. Rainbow Ride is set in the skies, and Mario has to use several flying carpets to get from one platform to another. Enemies on his way are Lakitus, Bob-ombs and Amps, rarely Goombas and Fly Guys, and several Fire Spitters. There are platforms which fall down when Mario stands on them for too long, and circle platforms which spin rapidly.

Levels
The level titles and numbers correspond to Super Mario 64 unless otherwise noted.
Mario can get a seventh (eighth in the remake) Star in Rainbow Ride by collecting 100 coins, as in every course of the game. To do this, Mario can collect a number of Blue Coins near the maze of the Red Coins and the Bob-omb Buddy.
Star 1: Cruiser Crossing the Rainbow
In the first mission, Mario has to get the Power Star on the flying ship of the stage. It is not guarded, and Mario has to use several flying Carpets to get to the ship, dodging Lakitus on his way. On the main intersection in the stage, which is made of four spinning discs, Mario has to go to the Carpet on the right, and take another Carpet on the left further above. When reaching the ship, Mario is hindered by winds which try to stop him from getting the star. In the DS version, there is a Wario cap and a ? Block containing a Power Flower. With these, Metal Wario can bypass the winds easily and grab the star. However, it is also possible to get the star as Mario by becoming Balloon Mario with the Power Flower.

Swinging Platforms Path
;Names in other languages
To the left of the player's starting position on the spinning platforms is a pole the player can use to reach the platform below. Hovering above the stair-like platform is a Fly Guy, as well as a seesaw afterward that can help the player reach the platform above. Afterward is a swing, followed by a seesaw that leads to several Falling Blocks. Across the gap is a flamethrower that the player has to time their jump with in order to prevent getting burned. Past the flamethrower is a moving platform followed by a split in the path; up the stairs is another swing that leads to a Power Star, and across the Falling Blocks are pyramid platforms.

Underneath all the platforms up to the split is a large flat platform with a yellow block containing a 1-UP Mushroom.
Star 2: The Big House in the Sky
In this level, Mario has to get the Power Star which is on top the big house in the area. Starting from the main intersection, he has to take the carpet to the right as in the last mission, but has to choose the right carpet again further above. By jumping over obstacles in the path of the flying carpet and avoiding the flame thrower in the house's basement, Mario can get to the top of the castle-like building to get the star.

Maze Path
;Names in other languages
Directly ahead of the player's starting position on the spinning platforms is a concrete maze, with a moving platform that helps the player reach it. Inside the maze are the course's Red Coins, Bob-ombs, and flame throwers. By using the Wall Kick to reach the top of the maze through the back end of it, the player can find a Bob-omb Buddy that opens the cannon on the Rainbow Cruiser.

Carpet Path
Star 3: Coins Amassed in a Maze
To the right of the player's starting position on the spinning platforms is a magic carpet. When stepped on, the carpet moves along its path, and the player has to dodge several platforms in order to prevent being swept off. At the end of the carpet's path are two more carpets, a left and a right, along with the Lakitu from earlier in the N64 version if the player did not defeat it.

In this level, Mario has to get all eight Red Coins to get the Power Star. All coins are found in a side-view maze which is found right near the level's main intersection. On the bottom level, there are Bob-ombs trying to hurt Mario, and further above, Mario can be hit by flames as well. He has to use different tactics, such as the Wall Jump and the Long Jump to get all Red Coins and make the star appear.

The carpet to the left takes the player to the Rainbow Cruiser. The carpet moves around a spinning platform the player has to dodge to avoid getting pushed off the carpet. The bottom of the platform also acts as a flamethrower (the flame is absent in the DS version), and the top has a 1-UP Mushroom floating above it. Once at the Rainbow Cruiser, the player has to jump over platforms and Falling Blocks to climb onto it. The Rainbow Cruiser has a heavy wind rush through it, pushing the player to the stern of the ship. On the deck, there are a couple of Bob-ombs (one replaced by a Goomba in the DS version) and a Lakitu, with the cannon on the stern of the ship. On the bow is the Power Star for the first mission. Using the cannon, the player can reach a platform with a Chuckya and the Power Star for the sixth mission.

The carpet to the right takes the player to the Cloud House. The carpet moves through several platforms the player has to climb over, and the player needs to quickly return to the carpet before it disappears. On one of these platforms is an Amp circling it. The Cloud House itself has a large fireplace that acts like a flamethrower, as well as having a Power Star on its roof. In the DS version, it also contains the Switch Star of the course.
Star 4: Swingin' in the Breeze
In this level, Mario has to clear an obstacle course to get the Power Star. From the main intersection, he has to go leftwards and climb down the pole, then take the way down the right. He has to use platforms which swing back and forth, cross several fall-down platforms and avoid a flame thrower to get the star.

By hitting a flat ! switch, he can make the triangles temporarily turn over, creating platforms which he can use to jump over to the star.

Super Smash Bros. series
The course name is a reference to the song from MGM's The Wizard of Oz.
Rainbow Cruise
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, there is a stage based on Rainbow Ride, known as Rainbow Cruise in the North American release, which is Rainbow Ride's Japanese name. This stage returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In PAL versions of Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, its name is corrected to "Rainbow Ride," but Super Smash Bros. Brawls North American release and both English releases of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still refer to it as "Rainbow Cruise."

The background music for Rainbow Ride is "Slider," a frantic bluegrass music/country music arrangement of the "Super Mario 64 Main Theme." Rainbow Ride shares this theme with Tick Tock Clock, the Tower of the Wing Cap, Vanish Cap Under the Moat, Wing Mario Over the Rainbow, and Battle Fort, as well as during Koopa the Quick's footraces.
Mario has to get to the roof of the house in the sky as quickly as possible after stepping on a star switch. He can do it by using a Power Flower to get the Power Star.

The background music of Rainbow Ride is heard at several places throughout Super Mario 64, including the races against Koopa the Quick, The Princess's Secret Slide, the slides on Cool, Cool Mountain and Tall, Tall Mountain, as well as the entire level of Tick Tock Clock. It is fast and joyful music. The music shares the melody of the the main theme of the game, as heard in Bob-omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Tall, Tall Mountain and Tiny-Huge Island. This melody is also used in the music heard at Cool, Cool Mountain. In Super Smash Bros.
