Personality
E. Gadd is a scientist experienced and a professional in the paranormal works, determined to study and analyse the paranormal world and the ghosts that inhabit here by building devices for such research. When he first comes across Luigi, he admires his bravery to rescue his brother, and is shown to be patient with him.
In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, more of his personality is explored, acting as sort of a father figure to him. However, he is shown to be less patient with him early on in the game, but much more expressive and wild, even when Luigi appears cowardly and afraid, whilst also having some high value of himself, shown when he tells Luigi that he can't be bothered to catch ghosts himself in "Severe Infestation," and that has no qualms in having Luigi exploring the Treacherous Mansion by himself despite the serious dangers. However, all of this is done within good reason, as he tries to encourage Luigi to overcome his fears, especially when he claims that Luigi doesn't need to be afraid of being pixelated after having it done dozens of times by the time of "Play Catch."
If Luigi takes too long to reach a certain point or starts going the wrong way within certain missions, E. Gadd will call him via the Dual Scream and sternly direct him back onto the right path. There is also one particular part where E. Gadd gets completely upset with Luigi's supposed cowardice; during "Confront the Source," if Luigi attempts to leave the Lobby, E. Gadd will stop him, and gets even more frustrated every time he tries to leave.
However, once it was revealed that Mario was captured by King Boo once again, all of these previous traits were completely obliterated and supported Luigi in anyway possible to help him rescue his kidnapped brother. His father figure personality is also examined again at this point, as he got a little emotional before sending Luigi off to fight the Tough Possessor. E. Gadd also gets extremely scared when Luigi doesn't make it back to the Bunker afterwards due to King Boo's interference.
When Luigi restores the Dark Moon, E. Gadd is very proud of Luigi's progress and allows him to continue his research with the ghosts of Evershade Valley.
In the third game, most of his personality traits from the second game remain intact. It is shown that he sometimes does not tend to analyse situations thoroughly, which lead to his own capture by King Boo and Hellen Gravely. While still a little impatient with Luigi at times, he is still supportive of him in trying to save his friends, but also centers around himself a little bit a times as he also demands ghosts for capture.
In the second and third games, one personality trait that has remained constant is a lack of responsibility, especially with the Toad assistants he hires. He does not keep any record of his presence, sending them to these haunted places full of ghosts unassisted and getting captured by Boos, and has Luigi escorting the Toads himself. Also, in the third game, he has to have Luigi rescue a Toad who when to retrieve a special power-up for the Poltergust G-00 at the B2 - Boilerworks. Although, he does eventually realize his mistakes and does whatever possible to fix them.
