If the player is using Mellow Mode, then they can have the Poochy Pups join Winged Yoshi in each stage. The trio replace Yoshi's yarn balls, following him and being able to be thrown just like the item. This is to the point where Yoshi cannot have yarn balls follow him while the Poochy Pups are active: loose ones fall off the screen when collected and swallowing enemies has the yarn ball dissipate on the spot. Yarn Baskets do not create yarn balls either. Unlike yarn balls, Poochy Pups do not despawn on contact with objects they interact with. This does not prevent Poochy Pups from filling in frame objects and enemies and tying up enemies like a yarn ball, but it does stop them from using the unique tied up defeat animations for Shy Guys, Lakitu, and Wall Lakitu. The latter bursts immediately, the remaining two still fall into the foreground. Enemies that are tied up and can be defeated in that state by jumping on them, such as Piranha Plants and Hot Dogs, can instead be defeated while tied up by a thrown Poochy Pup. This excludes Stilt Guys, because the stilts get tied up rather than the enemy, and Ukiki, who are defeated by a thrown Poochy Pup even if they are not tied up. Gravity begins to act on a Poochy Pup once it bounces off any surface, whereas thrown yarn balls ignore gravity. Poochy Pups bounce somewhat erratically, but bounce back to Yoshi after the fourth impact. They also rebound back to Yoshi if they hit a Winged Cloud, bead jars, spikes, or go too far from the screen. These conditions all cause yarn balls to despawn, and this can be further generalized to any case where yarn balls despawn, except for Yarn Baskets which do cause yarn balls to despawn. Poochy Pups can collect hearts, Wonder Wool and the Invincibility Egg, unlike yarn balls, though they bounce off of Wonder Wool as though they hit a Winged Cloud. Thrown Poochy Pups do not become loose and non-damaging if Yoshi uses his tongue on them. If all three Poochy Pups are not following Yoshi for any reason and the player attempts to throw one, Yoshi throws red yarn balls instead. Yoshi can throw up to three red yarn balls in this way before a short cooldown begins, perhaps imitating how Yoshi can normally hold six yarn balls. Even if this cooldown is over, there can only be three red yarn balls in play at the same time. While Yoshi is in the air or standing on certain fiddly places like Ice Blocks and some moving platforms, Poochy Pups have a flying animation where they twirl their tail. Poochy Pups bounce to Yoshi as he goes through any transition in the game, or prepares to go through it in the case of doors. Poochy Pups have a unique animation when entering doors compared to yarn balls, where they bunch up in a triangle formation. If Yoshi is defeated, the Poochy Pups go tumbling off the screen where yarn balls would be static. After going through the Goal Ring or defeating a boss, the Poochy Pups celebrate alongside Yoshi where yarn balls turn into beads. The Poochy Pups have a different animation for Castles compared to Forts.

The Poochy Pups additionally help the player throughout the whole game. Sometimes, one will drop directly down to the ground, then rush ahead to tackle an enemy. Poochy Pups moving in this way are essentially rolling yarn balls, as they are able to collect beads. This tackle affects the enemy exactly like it was hit with a thrown Poochy Pup/yarn ball. They are more likely to do this for enemies that can be tied up, like Piranha Plants, Stilt Guys, and Bill Blasters, but this excludes Snag-Stitches. They do not attack enemies that are frames, such as Frame Chomp and Frame Boo. If a Poochy Pup collides with any enemy while attacking, even if this is not the enemy they intended to attack, then that enemy gets hit. This action of the Poochy Pups has no effect on Tap-Taps, but the Poochy Pups will try to attack fruitlessly. This attack is usually completed with a final jump, after which the Poochy Pup bounces back to Winged Yoshi. If this jump collides with a wall, then the Poochy Pup stops. If this jump lands on the ground, the Poochy Pup trips and is stuck for a short time. This attack does not happen against Tap-Taps, leaving the Poochy Pups to chase those enemies around. Much like with yarn balls, Poochy Pups return after connecting with any enemy, missing their target, or falling off screen in pursuit of their target. Note that Poochy Pups can act even if Yoshi is trapped by an enemy, potentially freeing Yoshi in the process. Poochy Pups ignore bosses, and also Naval Piranha in Naval Piranha 2: Now It's Personal!.
