The game starts out with the [[Piranha Plant]] in the ground at small size getting showered by the rain and coming out of the ground. When the camera zooms out and shows everyone, the minigame starts.
The minigame opens with a small [[Piranha Plant]] coming out of the ground after being showered with rain. In later iterations, the replacement, [[Petey Piranha]], flies in from offscreen before gameplay starts.


The gameplay involves team players [[Ground Pound|ground-pounding]] a cloud to launch raindrops on the Piranha Plant (Petey Piranha in later versions) to make it larger, faster, and jump farther, as the solo player skateboards off, dodging obstacles, namely rocks and falling logs; if they jump onto a vine, they can swing on it. If the solo player is hit, the team players win, but if the solo player reaches the end, where the Piranha Plant or Petey Piranha hits their face into a gate, they win.
In ''Mario Party: The Top 100'', instead of sprouting out of the ground, the tiny Petey flies in from offscreen, and he attempts to roar, although it sounds more like a sigh due to his small size.


In later iterations, a meter showing the solo player's progress appears on the bottom of the screen.

The players on the cloud have to [[Ground Pound|ground-pound]] the cloud to feed the Piranha Plant (or [[Petey Piranha]] in ''Mario Party: The Top 100'' and ''Mario Party Superstars'') with rain, while the other player has to run away from the Piranha Plant and avoid obstacles along the way. If the Piranha Plant/Petey catches the other player, the team players win. If the other player manages to run away from the Piranha Plant/Petey long enough, the other player wins.

If the solo player wins, the camera moves closer to them as they do their victory pose, though if they lose in ''Mario Party'', the announcer says ''"Miss!"'' as the Piranha Plant thrashes the solo player, throws them at the ground, and growls at them. On [[Mini-Game Island]], the announcer says, ''"Finish!"'' instead. In later editions of Piranha's Pursuit, if the solo player loses, Petey Piranha knocks them off-screen.
