History
In Super Mario World, Cannon Pipes are always on a slant and fire Mario or Luigi to very far places (about two or three screens away). The pipes here cannot be entered and are always exited via a different pipe, mostly from an underground area.

Pipe Cannons first appear in Super Mario World. They are always on a slant and fire the player to far places (about two or three screens away). These pipes cannot be entered and are always exited via a different pipe, usually from an underground area.

New Super Mario Bros.
The Cannon Pipes from New Super Mario Bros., New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U are similar to the Cannons used to travel to a different world, except they fire the player within a much smaller range. To use these pipes, unlike in Super Mario World, players are to enter one and then are automatically fired off, often to an unreachable ledge, platform, or even a different area. In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Cannon Pipes are also used to reach the Rainbow World and in New Super Mario Bros. U, there are Cannon Pipes on the world map, which are used as shortcuts to completed worlds, or to get to Secret Island and Superstar Road.
Pipe Cannons are objects in New Super Mario Bros. Unlike before, a Pipe Cannon automatically fires off the player character when entered, often to an unreachable ledge, platform, or even a different area. The game introduces the similar Warp Cannons, except they can blast the player character off to another world.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7, the course Airship Fortress contains a Cannon Pipe, which shoots the player to the tower near the Airship.
Pipe Cannons reappear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, retaining the same functionality from New Super Mario Bros. Another type of Pipe Cannon makes an appearance in the minigame 1-up Blast, where the player(s) can enter these cannons and aim before they blast themselves and attempt to pop balloons to earn 1-Ups.

New Super Mario Bros. 2
Pipe Cannons reappear in New Super Mario Bros. 2, where they function the same as they did in New Super Mario Bros. A Pipe Cannon is also used to reach the Rainbow Course.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Pipe Cannons reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U, where there are Pipe Cannons on the world map in each world, which are used as shortcuts to worlds the player has entered before, or to get to the Secret Island and Superstar Road. After the level Layer-Cake Desert-1 (Soda Jungle-1 if the player cleared Blooper's Secret Lair / Cheep Chomp Chase) is beaten and Nabbit is seen stealing Toad's power-ups, Toad uses a Pipe Cannon in order to quickly travel to Acorn Plains and give chase, unlocking Pipe Cannons for regular use on the world map.

In the levels themselves, Pipe Cannons function the same as in previous installments.

Pipe Cannons reappear in New Super Luigi U, where they function the same as they did in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Super Mario 3D World
Clear Pipe Cannon

Cannons similar to Pipe Cannons appear in Super Mario 3D World, being Clear Pipe Cannons, having the ability to launch the player in a very similar manner to Pipe Cannons. Additionally, another similar cannon appears, called the Cloud Cannon, which, when jumped into, produces a white Pipe Cannon that launches the player into a Coin Heaven.

Super Mario Run
In the Remix 10 mode of Super Mario Run, on random occasions, when the player enters a pipe to go to the next area on the map screen, it may turn out to be a Pipe Cannon, launching the player into the sky.ref needed They land in the next area, where the other side of the Pipe Cannon recedes back into the ground as normal.

Mario Kart DS
A black Pipe Cannon appears in Mario Kart DS in the course Airship Fortress, which contains a Pipe Cannon, which shoots the player to the tower near the airship. It functions identically to other cannons.

Mario Kart 7
A black Pipe Cannon reappears in Mario Kart 7 through the returning course <small>DS</small> Airship Fortress, having the same function as it did in Mario Kart DS.

Mario Kart Tour
Pipe Cannons reappear in Mario Kart Tour, where they are simply called "pipes" and serve as a main method of obtaining drivers, karts, and gliders. The player fires a pipe by dragging it down and releasing it, causing it to shoot out a driver, kart, or glider. A green pipe can fire any item available in the pipe, including High-End items, but if the pipe appears as a golden one, the player is guaranteed to receive a High-End. There are multiple types of pipes in the game, including the Today's Challenge Pipe, the All-Clear Pipe, the Multiplayer Pipe, and Token Shop pipes.

Since the Baby Rosalina Tour, players could fire at least two free pipe pulls during the tour, and the number went up to four pipe pulls since the Flower Tour. Additionally, starting with the Wild West Tour, players can use an All-Clear Pipe that consists of a random High-End driver, kart, or glider after completing each cup within a tour, as well as the last two free pipe pulls being reserved for the second week's spotlight pipe.

Up until the Battle Tour and the Version 3.0.0 update, the player could spend five rubies to fire a pipe once or 45 to fire it ten times. Each pipe held 100 drivers, karts, or gliders, with some pipes occasionally holding only 50 items instead of 100. A new pipe with different content was available each week. The pipes which can be pulled using rubies, including the free pipe pulls, were removed in the Version 3.0.0 update, and would be replaced with the Spotlight Shop and pipes available in Tour Gifts.

Additionally, the black Pipe Cannon featured in DS Airship Fortress reappears in the game through the aforementioned returning course, having the same function as it did in Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 7.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey
In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, Pipe Cannons appear throughout a handful of areas inside Bowser's body, functioning the same as in the 2D platformer games.
