He stands in the middle of the path Yoshi is taking, and will move to the other path if Yoshi moves to the other path. To pass, Yoshi has to [[Ground Pound]] the ground, and Pak E. Derm will fall on his head, allowing Yoshi to pass. Yoshi has to act quickly because Pak E. Derm will soon flip back upright. Yoshi encounters Pak E. Derm three times throughout the [[Treasure Hunt (level)|first level]], and he does not appear thereafter. Pak E. Derm's [[Message Block]] states, "Pak E. won’t let you by, unless you give something special a try!"

Derm would fall away, letting Yoshi pass. Yoshi had to act quickly, because the Pak E. Derm would get up soon. Yoshi encounters Pak E. Derm three times throughout the first level. After that, he's absent in all the other levels. Pak E. Derm's [[Hint Block]] stated the poem that is thought of synonymously with the character: "Pak E. Derm will not let you by, unless you give something special a try."
