| Each team or player competes to paint the eleven Goombas roaming around the square stage in their color by shooting paintballs at them. Goombas can be "repainted" if hit by a different-colored paintball. The paintball machines are restricted to opposite sides of the stage, and teammates cannot move past each other. Hitting opponents with paintballs stuns them briefly. The team or player that has more Goombas painted in their color when time runs out wins. A tie can occur only if an even number of Goombas is painted.

They then attempt to shoot paint, trying to paint the losers. The losers then run around trying to avoid being painted by the winners. The paint never actually hits the loser(s), however. |
| On the stage, the winning character(s) celebrate(s) as they walk back to the paintball machine(s), while the losing player(s) groan(s) before they run around to avoid being shot at by the winning player(s). If the minigame ends in a tie, all characters will do their losing animations.
