The '''P-Wing''' is a special [[List of items|item]] that debuted in ''[[Super Mario Bros. 3]]''. The "P" stands for "[[Koopa Paratroopa|Paratroopa]]" or "Patapata" (the Japanese name for that enemy). It functions similarly to the earlier power-up from ''[[Super Mario Bros. Special]]'' simply known as the [[Wing (Super Mario Bros. Special)|Wing]]. There is a similar item in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]'' called the [[P-Acorn]] which gives the user infinite gliding.

However, if the brothers are hit or receive a non-flight-based power-up within a level, they will lose the power of the P-Wing. Infinite [[Extra life|1-Up]] tricks involving [[stomp]]ing do not work in this form; all enemies normally worth 100 points are always worth 100 points if Mario has a P-Wing.

If a P-Wing is used from the map screen, the "P" on Mario or Luigi's body (as shown in the sprite on the left) indicates that they have P-Wing abilities. The "P" is not seen in the actual level and it is not seen again on the map screen once the level is exited which indicates Mario or Luigi has reverted to their normal abilities. A P-Wing ability will also be lost if the player uses [[Lakitu's Cloud]] or a [[Recorder|Magic Whistle]] with it active.

The P-Wing can be combined with the [[Tanooki Suit]]. However, in order to do this, one must use a P-Wing, then enter a level that has a Tanooki Suit hidden within it ([[World 4-5 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 4-5]], [[World 5-5 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 5-5]], [[World 6-3 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 6-3]], or {{world link|7|fortress|World 7-Fortress 1}}) and collect that Tanooki Suit without losing the P-Wing's power.

P-Wings are commonly found in [[treasure chest|treasure box]]es left behind after defeating certain [[Hammer Bro]]thers [[Enemy Course|on the map screen]]. They can also be found in secret white (blue in the game's remakes) [[Toad House]]s accessible by collecting a certain amount of coins in certain levels in the odd-numbered worlds ([[World 1-4 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 1-4]], [[World 3-8 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 3-8]], [[World 5-5 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 5-5]], and [[World 7-2 (Super Mario Bros. 3)|World 7-2]]), while in the even-numbered worlds (apart from [[Dark Land]]), white Toad Houses contain [[Anchor]]s. Additionally, by beating the game and restarting without resetting it, the player is rewarded with 28 P-Wings in their inventory, though only in the original NES version of the game.

[[List of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 pre-release and unused content|Unused data]] in ''[[Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3]]'' shows that the P-Wing could have been in a [[? Block]], like other power-ups, such as the [[Super Leaf]] and [[Fire Flower]]. Additionally, the [[Orange Mushroom House]] in [[World-e]] has Mario use a P-Wing to ascend to a box while avoiding spikes.

In the [[Nintendo 3DS]] game ''[[Super Mario 3D Land]]'', the P-Wing functions differently, warping Mario to the end of the course. If Mario touches a P-Wing, it will go into storage to use later. It only appears if [[Mario]] or [[Luigi]] loses 10 lives in a (skipped) normal world level (making P-Wing [[Assist Block]]s appear), or within certain [[Mystery Box]]es.
