In Super Mario World, it can be used by Mario or Luigi either to change the path that a line-guided platform is traveling on or, in #4 Ludwig's Castle, to toggle the direction in which the falling ceiling is moving. The switches can be turned on or off either by jumping against them from below, whirling Caped Mario's cape next to them or throwing an object, like a Koopa Shell, at them. Since using the cape to activate a block can hit it multiple times in succession, toggling an ON/OFF Switch that way does not guarantee that it will end up in the state intended by the player.
ON/OFF Switches are objects in Super Mario World and its reissue. One can be used by Mario or Luigi either to change the path that a Pulley Lift is traveling on or, in #4 Ludwig's Castle, to toggle the direction in which the falling ceiling is moving. The switches can be turned on or off by either jumping against them from below, whirling Caped Mario's cape next to them, or throwing an object, such as a Koopa Shell, at them. Since the player can use the cape to activate a block by hitting it multiple times in succession, toggling an ON/OFF Switch that way does not guarantee that it will end up in the state intended by the player. Apart from #4 Ludwig's Castle, ON/OFF Switches are mostly found in the levels Donut Plains 3 (where they first appear) and Way Cool, where the switches are abundant. They are sometimes guarded by a Fuzzy.

Apart from Ludwig's Castle, they are mostly found in the levels Donut Plains 3 and Way Cool, where the switches are abundant. They are sometimes guarded by a Fuzzy.

ON/OFF Switches are objects in Super Mario Maker 2. They are a usable course element. Compared to their original appearance in Super Mario World, they have a more saturated red and blue color scheme in all game styles, and the "ON" and "OFF" now flash in every style except for Super Mario 3D World. When hit, they can change the direction of Y-shaped track intersections, toggle the visibility of red and blue Dotted-Line Blocks, change the direction of red or blue Conveyor Belts, and change the radius of light around objects in the night Ghost House and night Underwater course styles.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder
New Super Mario Bros. 2
ON/OFF Switches are objects in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. They retain their ability to activate Dotted-Line Blocks, switch the direction of tracks, and lower the radius of light around objects. They can also switch the direction that red and blue Zip Tracks travel in, similarly to how they affected Conveyor Belts in Super Mario Maker 2. All of these attributes are displayed prominently in the level Color-Switch Dungeon.
In New Super Mario Bros. 2, two ON/OFF Switches appear in flower, where they switch the direction of certain Conveyor Belts. In this game, they bear a closer appearance to other switches in the game, and can only be hit from below. The first one appears close to the end of the level where it controls two Conveyor Belts leading to the third Star Coin, and the second one appears during the boss fight with Lemmy to control the Conveyor Belt used during the fight.

ON/OFF Switches reappear in Super Mario Party Jamboree in the 1-vs.-3 minigame On-Again, Off-Again, where the solo player attempts to use them to eliminate the team players by using Grrrols.
In Super Mario Maker 2, they appear as a placeable course element. When hit by the player, they can transform red and blue Dotted-Line Blocks into outlines or vice versa. In this game, they have more saturated red and blue palettes rather than having magenta and slate palettes. They can also transform other objects such as tracks, Conveyor Belts, Spike Blocks, Track Blocks, and Trampolines. In the night Ghost House and Underwater themes, they make the radius of light around the player smaller when hit.
