The console was released in Japan on February 26, 2011; in Europe on March 25, 2011; in the United States and Canada on March 27, 2011; and in Australia on March 31, 2011. In the version 9.0.0-20 update for the 3DS released on October 6, 2014, brand new themes were added onto the system for the users to customize their HOME menu. Users were given 5 starting themes, each a different color, with additional themes available for purchase in the new Theme Shop. Additionally, since another theme related update, users are able to set a "shuffle" like mode via Theme Settings where the user can set any themes into up to ten slots, so each theme is set to their HOME Menu to switch out every time they power on the 3DS, put it into sleep mode or open a 3DS applet. With the discontinuation of digital purchases for Nintendo 3DS in March 2023, it is no longer possible to buy themes, with only a limited number of free themes being available. Other themes can still be downloaded by those who purchased them when they were available.

Similarly to the DSi XL, the 3DS XL has larger screens: the upper measuring 124 mm (4.88 inches) and the lower measuring 106 mm (4.18 inches), both being 90% larger than the standard Nintendo 3DS screens, making it tied to the New Nintendo 3DS XL as the biggest screen on a Nintendo handheld so far. The resolution, however, is the same. The Nintendo 3DS family of systems appears frequently in ''[[WarioWare Gold]]'', in a number of different roles. As the game's story is about the player playing [[microgames]], cutscenes have [[Wario]], [[Mike]], and [[Fronk]] explain the game's control schemes using a Metallic Blue New Nintendo 3DS XL. [[Ralphie]] owns an Aqua Blue Nintendo 3DS. This system is a key item in [[18-Volt]]'s stage, as [[13-Amp]] steals it from Ralphie and 18-Volt has to defeat her in a rap battle to get it back for him. In the credits, 13-Amp holds a Nintendo 3DS of this color.

The microgame [[Stylus Hunt]] has players rotate a three-dimensional model of a Nintendo 3DS system displayed on the Touch Screen using Touch inputs to find its stylus. The microgame uses one of six different systems in a number of different colors: a Nintendo 3DS in blue or pink, a Nintendo 3DS XL in red or yellow-green, a Nintendo 2DS in pink or blue, a black New Nintendo 3DS, a Metallic Blue New Nintendo 3DS XL, and a Black + Turquoise New Nintendo 2DS XL. Part of the microgame's difficulty is remembering where the stylus is stored on each system, which is eased slightly because the stylus glows red or white. Additionally, the microgame [[amiibo Tap]] has the player scan an amiibo on a Metallic Blue New Nintendo 3DS XL.

An Aqua Blue Nintendo 3DS, a red Nintendo 3DS XL, a blue Nintendo 2DS, a black New Nintendo 3DS, a Metallic Blue New Nintendo 3DS XL, and a Black + Turquoise New Nintendo 2DS XL are [[List of souvenirs in WarioWare Gold|souvenirs]] that can be obtained in the [[Capsule Machine (WarioWare series)|Capsule Machine]]. Each one can be rotated around freely just like in the microgame. The face buttons, Circle Pad, and D-Pad swell and shrink when tapped. When their Power buttons are pressed, the systems turn on and start a mode where the player plays [[List of WarioWare Gold microgames#Microgames included in the Misc. console souvenirs|three microgames on loop]], only that they are controlled by tapping their {{button|3DS|A}} buttons. The {{button|3DS|A}} button animates faster while playing. Each of the systems has a different set of microgames. This mode does not track a score, unlike most other elements of ''WarioWare Gold''. Also, this mode cannot be paused. When the player gets a [[Game Over]] or uses the Power or {{button|3DS|Home}} buttons, the system turns off. Another Nintendo 3DS is a souvenir that is part of the Nintendo Collection, where the player can read descriptions of Nintendo products. Its entry additionally includes images and captions for a color swapped blue Nintendo 2DS and the three-dimensional model of the black New Nintendo 3DS. In this souvenir, the model is rotated with the Circle Pad.

In the Challenge mode [[Gamer|Sneaky Gamer]], [[9-Volt]] plays a game consisting of microgames on a blue Nintendo 2DS, replacing the [[Wii U|Wii U Gamepad]] like device in the mode's previous iteration as the minigame [[Gamer]] from ''[[Game & Wario]]''. In the description of Stylus Hunt 9-Volt further states, as per his character's concept of owning everything Nintendo has ever produced, that he owns one of each of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. 9-Volt is holding an Aqua Blue Nintendo 3DS in the prologue cutscene.

All of the [[List of souvenirs in WarioWare Gold#Minigames|minigame]]s in WarioWare Gold are depicted as Game Cards for fictitious games. The cards are stylized, as they only show artwork for the game rather than including a logo over artwork.

The minigame [[Autograph!]] sometimes has characters ask the player to sign the outer shell of a fictional green game system. It appears similar to a New Nintendo 3DS, but it has three outer cameras instead of two.

The device Wario plays games with in the prologue is a fictional yellow game system. It appears to be similar to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems but it does not have cameras.
