In its first formal video game appearance, New York is one of the cities &ndash; besides [[Rio de Janeiro]], [[Tokyo]], [[Cairo]], and [[London]] &ndash; Luigi has to visit in ''[[Mario is Missing!]]'' His task is to return artifacts to some of the city's landmarks that were invaded by [[Koopa Troopa|Koopa]]s. The Koopas stole "King Kong" from the [[Empire State Building]], the torch from the [[Statue of Liberty]], and the Statue of Prometheus from the [[Rockefeller Center]]. It is primarily based on the borough of Manhattan.

In ''[[Super Mario Odyssey]]'', the location of New Donk City is inspired by New York City. Its skyline backdrop also resembles Manhattan.
