Neville, the Bookish Father, is the first portrait ghost whom Luigi encounters in Luigi's Mansion and its Nintendo 3DS version. Neville is tall and lean with light blue skin. He has an oval-shaped head, yellow-green eyes, red hair and eyebrows, and a red pointed mustache. He wears a deep blue robe. Neville is the husband of Lydia and father of Chauncey and the twins Henry and Orville. Neville's portrait number in the Gallery is 1.

Neville can be found in the Study during Area 1, doing his usual activity of reading a book while sitting in a rocking chair. The book that Neville reads is titled "Mario Story", the Japanese name of Paper Mario. Neville does not attack, though there is a book in the Study that flies after Luigi. Neville occasionally yawns and stretches, leaving him open to being stunned by the flashlight and being vacuumed into the Poltergust 3000. Upon defeat, a Treasure Chest appears in the Study, containing the key to the Master Bedroom.
Neville, the Bookish Father (Japanese: パパーラ Papāra) is the first Portrait Ghost that Luigi encounters in Luigi's Mansion. He is tall, lean, with orange hair and an orange moustache and dons a purple robe.

Various portraits of what appears to be Neville is in various rooms of the mansion, more specifically the Parlor, Study, and Master Bedroom.
Neville is found in the Study on the second floor's west wing of the Mansion, the husband of Lydia and the father of Chauncey, Henry and Orville. Luigi found Neville reading on a rocking chair, previously warned by Professor E. Gadd that Portrait Ghosts were harder to catch. Soon books began to fly out of the shelves towards Luigi, damaging him five HP if they hit, and would disappear if sucked by his trusty vacuum. After the books launched, Neville would yawn, making him vulnerable, then, once some weak pulls came through, Luigi captured the portait ghost, earning the key to the Master Bedroom.

The player can read Neville's Big Baby Care Diary in the bookshelf behind Neville's rocking chair. The diary provides the player with hints on how to win Henry and Orville's game of hide and seek.
