Eggplant Men,[1][2] or Egg Plant Men,[3] are eggplants with masks covering a pair of white eyes (resembling welding masks or sandblasting masks) found in the Wrecking Crew series.

History[edit]

Wrecking Crew series[edit]

Wrecking Crew[edit]

Eggplant Men first appear in Phase 2 of the construction site in the game Wrecking Crew. An Eggplant Man runs around in a predictable pattern - it runs straight until it hits a drum and has to turn around. It climbs up or down any ladder it comes across in its path. If both a ladder up and a ladder down are in its path, it goes down if moving left and up if moving right. Its behavior is similar to how Gotchawrenches behaved in VS. Wrecking Crew.

Wrecking Crew '98[edit]

An Eggplant Man is the first challenger in puzzle mode in Wrecking Crew '98. Unlike the Eggplant Men in the previous game, his feet are attached directly to his underside instead of having legs. Eggplant Men also appear in their original capacity in the port of the previous game featured on the cartridge.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Eggplant Man is a trophy which can be obtained randomly.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, an Eggplant Man is a Novice-class Shield-type primary spirit, which depicts a scaled-up sprite of one from Wrecking Crew. Equipping the Eggplant Man spirit simply increases the fighter's power without granting any particular effect. In the spirit battle, the player confronts a team of six Warios on the Wrecking Crew stage.

WarioWare: Twisted![edit]

Eggplant Men made an appearance one of 9-Volt's microgames, Wrecking Crew. Here, Mario has to destroy all of their ladders with his hammer. If they touch Mario, the player loses the game.

NES Remix[edit]

Eggplant Men feature in several Wrecking Crew challenges in NES Remix.

Other appearances[edit]

Kid Eggplant in Chibi-Robo!

The Eggplant Wizard enemy from Nintendo's 1986 game Kid Icarus were designed in part as a tribute to Wrecking Crew's Eggplant Men, as well as Kid Icarus graphics designer Toru Osawa's "passion for eggplants."[4]

An Eggplant Man also appears in Chibi-Robo! as Kid Eggplant, one of the three treasures Captain Plankbeard is searching for. The captain is wild about eggplants, and attempts to capture Kid Eggplant, but he does not succeed. For freeing him, Kid Eggplant rewards Chibi-Robo with a Super Eggplant and a Kid Eggplant Sticker, after Chibi kindly rejects Kid Eggplant's offer to turn him into an eggplant. Kid Eggplant's name in the Japanese version of Chibi-Robo! is "Nasubi Kamen", which is the same Japanese name as Eggplant Man.

Eggplant Man debuted as an enemy in the NES game Wrecking Crew. Even though his movement pattern was very simple, he was a fairly formidable foe, since Mario and Luigi had limited means of attack. You could beat this enemy by dropping a Dead-End Drum on him or by trapping him behind a door and blowing up the room.
