The Mushroom World is an area with eight countries in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Mushroom Kingdom serves as a gateway to these lands. In Super Mario Bros. 3, Bowser's Koopalings have taken over the other seven kingdoms of the Mushroom World. They stole the Magic Wands of the kings of each domain and transformed them into various creatures. While Mario and Luigi eventually defeat them and restore the kings to normal, Bowser himself returns to the Mushroom Kingdom in their absence and kidnaps Princess Peach once again. He is later thwarted in his own territory.

While the Mushroom World originally seemed to exclude the Mushroom Kingdom, later uses of the term apparently count Princess Peach's sovereignty as well. In Yoshi's Safari, it is stated during the ending that Mario and Yoshi departed from Jewelry Land to return to the Mushroom World, where the princess awaits them. Furthermore, "Mushroom World" is sometimes used to refer to the Mushroom Kingdom in Paper Mario; the kingdom went under that name in the original Japanese script, but the English localization substituted most instances with the more common Mushroom Kingdom to fit the context. Similarly, the Japanese version of the SNES manual of Super Mario World uses "Mushroom World" to refer to Mario, Luigi, and Peach's homeland in a direct reference to Super Mario Bros. 3, which was changed to "Mushroom Kingdom" in the official English localization. However, as shown on other home video release boxes, this was mistaken for the Mushroom Kingdom, which is also alternatively referred to as "Mushroomland" in the cartoon itself and related comic series.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
Mushroom World is orbited by a variety of natural satellites. These satellites apparently have atmospheres similar to Mushroom World's, as Mario is able to breathe without the use of a helmet (unlike on the Planet Blobule, a planet seperate from Mushroom World).
The Mushroom World is the main setting in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Names in other languages
Although unconfirmed, it is likely that the worlds featured in other Nintendo franchises are a part of the same universe associated with Mushroom World. This explains why characters from other franchises appear on Mushroom World (as well as how characters are able to battle in the Super Smash Bros. series). It is even possible that Mushroom World and this Nintendo universe are a part of an even greater video game universe, given that characters from non-Nintendo franchises, such as Final Fantasy heroes and Solid Snake, have appeared on Mushroom World.

Is Mushroom World actually the Earth?
<references/>

SMB3
Mushroom World is considered to be a distinct entity from the Earth, as the geography and history of the two worlds are completely different.  In games where the Earth is explicitly represented, such as Mario's Time Machine and Mario is Missing!, the Earth resembles the Earth we actually live on. We share this video game Earth's history, as well as its environments and other traits. Features of Mushroom World, such as the invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom by Bowser, or giant mushrooms growing to the size of trees, do not exist in games where Earth is represented. However, it is possible Mushroom World is an alternate version of Earth, given the similarities between the two. This is explicitly stated in the anime film The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach, Super Mario cartoons, Nintendo Adventure Books and Super Mario Bros. film. In these mediums, characters are able to travel between the two versions of Earth through dimensional gateways. However, this does not mean Mushroom World is Earth, just its equivalent in an alternate dimension.

Inferred Lands of Mushroom World
These lands are thought to exist in the same world as Mario's, given that characters such as Wario and DK appear in games with Mario. However, these lands are not explicitly associated with the Mushroom Kingdom. As such, it is possible these lands exist in a different world.

* Donkey Kong Island

* Northern Kremisphere
* Timber's Island
* Willow Woods and Isle 'O Hags, both of which are mentioned as the homes of Conker the Squirrel and Banjo
* The various kingdoms of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
* Diamond City (may, in fact, exist on Earth)

Worlds distinct from Mushroom World
These are worlds that are explicitly distinct from Mushroom World. However, this does not mean interaction between different worlds does not exist.

* Subcon is a world that exists in Mario's dreams.
* Earth is a planet separate from Mushroom World (although it is possible Mushroom World is an alternate version of Earth).
* The Factory of the Smithy Gang is an alternate dimension.
* The Shroob Planet, the home planet of the Shroobs, is a world far away from Mushroom World.
* In Super Paper Mario, Flipside, a place "between dimensions" is explored by Mario as well as other characters. This game also contains an entire planet that exists in a different dimension: Planet Blobule. In fact, the game contains many other dimensions distinct from Mushroom World.
* Future Fun Land is Wizpig's home planet far from Mushroom World.
* The lands of Wario: Master of Disguise are in an alternate TV dimension that can be reached via the Telmet.
* Bananase is mentioned as being the home planet of the alien Xananabs.
* In Super Mario Galaxy Mario will travel to different planets across the galaxy.
