Mugly is the first boss of Donkey Kong Country Returns and its Nintendo 3DS remake, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Mugly is fought by Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong at the end of the Jungle world in the boss level, Mugly's Mound, where he is hypnotized by Kalimba Tiki. Mugly is a distant relative of a later boss, Thugly.<ref>{{ref quote|Thugly is related to Mugly, the boss from the first area in the Jungle. Mugly is a monster-like boss who is yellow at first. He walks on all fours and has a huge mouth with many white, crooked teeth. Mugly has two lazy eyes and is covered with red spikes that he can willfully retract. During Mugly's second phase, he becomes orange instead of yellow. In Mugly's third and final phase, he turns from orange to red. There is a target-like design on his back, which the Kongs must jump on during the battle while Mugly's spikes are retracted.
Mugly | ===Attacks=== | ||
Mugly only has four attacks. His basic attack consists of him running from one side of the arena to the other. During this time, his spikes are retracted, which makes him vulnerable to a jump attack. Mugly can also bounce along the stage, trying to crush Donkey and Diddy beneath him. His spikes are also retracted during this attack.
Mugly performs the same moves in the second and third phases of the battle except faster than the previous phase of the battle. In the latter two phases, Mugly creates a huge shockwave from landing. In both phases, if Mugly hits into a wall, he becomes dizzy temporarily; the Kongs have an opportunity to jump on Mugly.

|Mugly doesn't even peel bananas before eating them! Maybe he gets his yellow skin that way. I'm sure he's a lovable monster when he isn't controlled by evil Tikis. When he charges, his spikes go away—maybe so he can go faster? It definitely exposes his weak spot... | |||
|You know how eating carrots all the time can turn you orange? If bananas have a similar effect, that might explain Mugly. His spikes retract whenever he charges, which is either a sign of his better nature when he's not hypnotised by the Tiki Tak Tribe, or just a regular old weak point! | |||
