Puddles of mud appear in ''[[Super Mario Kart]]'' and ''[[Mario Kart: Super Circuit]]'' as obstacles in both [[SNES Choco Island 1|Choco Island 1]] and [[SNES Choco Island 2|Choco Island 2]], where driving through them slows the player can causes mud to be thrown behind the kart. A large portion of Choco Island 2 in particular is taken up by a mud puddle. Mud in ''Mario Kart: Super Circuit'' is no longer shown being thrown behind the kart, and the mud was given a lighter texture.

Mud in ''[[Mario Kart: Double Dash!!]]'' appears throughout [[GCN Waluigi Stadium|Waluigi Stadium]], composing most of the track's off-road areas.

Mud in ''[[Mario Kart DS]]'' appears throughout [[DS Wario Stadium|Wario Stadium]] and in [[DS Delfino Square|Delfino Square]]'s shortcut prior to the bridge.

Mud in ''[[Mario Kart Wii]]'' reappears in {{classic|GCN|Waluigi Stadium}} and {{classic|DS|Delfino Square}}. The cave section of {{classic link|N64|DK's Jungle Parkway}} has mud added to the off-road portions. The final area behind the [[Finish line (object)|Finish line]] at [[Toad's Factory]] also features mud.

 

Some mud appears at the starting section of [[Maka Wuhu]] in ''[[Mario Kart 7]]''.

Mud in ''[[Mario Kart 8]]'' and its [[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe|port]] appears on {{classic|DS|Wario Stadium}} and [[Excitebike Arena]]. In the ''[[Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass|Booster Course Pass]]'', mud also appears on {{classic link|GBA|Riverside Park}} and {{classic link|GCN|Waluigi Stadium}}.

Mud in ''[[Mario Kart Tour]]'' appears in [[SNES Choco Island 1]], [[SNES Choco Island 2]], [[GBA Sunset Wilds]], and [[DS Luigi's Mansion]], though it no longer slows drivers down, instead fulfilling an entirely aesthetic purpose. This type of mud also appears in [[RMX Choco Island 1]] and [[RMX Choco Island 2]].

Patches of thicker-looking mud appear in various other courses, such as [[SNES Donut Plains 1]], [[SNES Donut Plains 2]], [[SNES Donut Plains 3]], [[GBA Riverside Park]], and [[RMX Donut Plains 1]]. They typically cover areas closer to the inner edge of a wide curve. They slow drivers down to an extent, much like off-road sections do, but are shown as being part of the drivable track in minimaps. Drivers can also perform [[Mini-Turbo]] actions while on this type of mud, albeit without getting speed boosts; likewise, any speed boosts resulted from performing Mini-Turbos are interrupted upon entering a patch of mud. The sand patches inside the temple in [[Wii Dry Dry Ruins]] function identically.

Mud in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'' appears on the {{conjectural|Boulder Planet}} in [[Good Egg Galaxy]]. Various sections of mud are on this planet, and standing in it will result in [[Mario]]'s movement speed and jump height being reduced.

Mud in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' functions identically as in the previous game. If [[Rock Mario]] rolls over mud, he does not slow down. It is found on the {{conjectural|Cylindrical Planet}} in [[Sky Station Galaxy]] and the {{conjectural|Boulder Planet}} in [[Boulder Bowl Galaxy]]. Mud also appears in [[Yoshi Star Galaxy]], in which it is demonstrated that [[Yoshi]] can move effortlessly through mud without losing speed.

 

Mud in ''[[Nintendo Land]]'' appears in the [[Mario Chase]] stage Mud River Run. The mud separates the different sections of the stage and slows down any player who walks into it, covering them with mud. If the player dressed as Mario collects the [[Super Star]], they are not slowed down by the mud while it is active.

Mud in ''[[Dr. Mario World]]'' is used to cover [[Muddy Coin]]s. The mud on it can be removed by hitting the coins. Once it is cleaned, the player can receive the [[coin]].
