Retrieved October 26, 2017.</ref> are collectibles that appear in ''[[Super Mario Odyssey]]''. They are very similar to [[Silver Star]]s from ''[[Super Mario 64 DS]]'', ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'', and ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'' in that [[Mario]] must collect five of them in total in order to make a [[Power Moon]] appear. Unlike with Silver Stars, if Mario dies, he retains his Moon Shards. The total number of Moon Shards that Mario has collected can be seen at the top of the screen, similar to how [[Star Chip]]s work in ''Super Mario Galaxy'' and ''Super Mario Galaxy 2''. That display goes away if Mario moves far away from the area with Moon Shards. Unlike the Power Moons themselves, they are the same color in every kingdom, being golden with a white border, and do not restore Mario's [[Health Meter|health]] when collected.

After a Power Moon found by collecting Moon Shards has been collected, the player can recollect those Moon Shards to recollect the Power Moon. However, the display for Moon Shards does not appear. As with already collected Power Moons, these Moon Shards are transparent. In 8-bit areas, they are greyer instead.
