Monstar is a ghost-like monster from Paper Mario and is a mini-boss who attacks those who enter Starborn Valley.  When Mario and his friends first encounter it, Monstar appears tough to defeat. However, Monstar is really nothing more than a bunch of Star Kids trying to protect their home. When Monstar was about to attack, it would make a huge light show with amazing special effects. However, the attack deals only 1 damage point. After attacking, it asks Mario if he is scared yet in a shaky voice.

The battle was really simply moving the plot along than anything else, but Monstar still gives some Star Points.
Monstar is a ghost-like monster from Paper Mario. This creature appears and ambushes Mario and his partners as they approach the outskirts of Starborn Valley, where it warns them to "turn away" and "go no further," lest they be "eaten." The player will then be presented with the choice to either flee the area or fight; choosing the latter option will initiate the battle. Its name is a pun on "monster", and "star" (due to being made out of Star Kids).

Despite an intimidating appearance, an attack consisting of a flurry of shooting stars, and Goombario's Tattle assuming that "it must be very powerful," Monstar has only 20 HP and an attack power of 1. Upon its defeat, the creature is revealed to be nothing more than a handful of Star Kids trying to protect the valley, who attempt to give one last warning before retreating.
Also notable about the battle is the fact that Monstar was invulnerable to Star Spirit attacks and the Shooting Star item.

Trivia
During battle, Monstar is immune to the powers granted by the Star Spirits as well as the Shooting Star item, as it is itself a creature made from stars.
*Its name is a pun on monster and a portmanteau of "monster" and "star".
*This is also the name of the alien monsters that the Looney Toons must beat at basketball in the 1996 film Space Jam. It also happens to be the name of one of Starfy's transformations in the 2009 DS game The Legendary Starfy.
*Although he is one of the easiest bosses in the game, his attack is the hardest to guard (besides using badges and partner abilities) because the duration of the attack is very long and the player needs perfect timing for such a lengthy attack.

Monstar also appears in the 27th issue of Super Mario-kun. It terrifies and attacks Mario, Goombario, and Kooper, but when Mario defeats it, many Star Kids reveal themselves and escape, surprising Mario and his group.

*In the original Nintendo 64 version of the game, Monstar has a moving iridescent star pattern over it. However, most emulators, including the official Virtual Console version on the Wii and Wii U, incorrectly render this as a cloud of star-like particles surrounding it. The Nintendo Switch Online version partially corrects this by having the star pattern extend to the outline of Monstar's sprite.
