Monkey Mines (simply known as Mines in the television series) is the second world of Donkey Kong Country. It has five levels, most of which take place in a subterranean setting. On Donkey Kong Island, Monkey Mines is located at the foot of the hill leading to next world, Vine Valley. Winky is the only Animal Friend who appears in the world. Master Necky is the boss fought at the end. The Ruins world from Donkey Kong Country Returns is thematically similar and has been suggested to be the same location.
Monkey Mines (simply known as Mines in the animated series) is the second area adventured through in the game Donkey Kong Country. The only animal buddy used in this area is Winky the Frog. The boss of the area is Master Necky. This area was also the first appearance of the Kremling, Krash, as well as the first place with mine-kart stages. There was a temple at the end of the stage which is currently believed to be built by the Kremlings, but there is no evidence to prove this.

In the cartoon, this area is closely connected to King K. Rool and his minions' base. The area is alluded to in the Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Donkey Kong Adventure story expansion, where it is mentioned in the description of Rabbid Cranky's Croaker Disposer. Since this weapon takes its design after Winky the Frog, the description references how the Animal Buddy first appears in this world in Donkey Kong Country.

Winky's Walkway is the first level of Monkey Mines is also the first level to feature Winky the Frog. The high-jumping amphibian can only be reached by jumping off of a Necky. This level is also the shortest in the game, being about half the length of a normal level. Enemies here include some Neckies that help the Kongs reach higher areas, Gnawties who are mainly spat out of Oil Drums, and Klaptraps who are regular enemies throughout the level. The level becomes extended in the Game Boy Color version.

Mine Cart Carnage is the second level of the dark mines and also the first minecart level. A secret shortcut can be found at the beginning of the stage that allows the Kongs to entirely skip the level. This Warp Barrel, however, was removed in the Game Boy Color version. The only enemies found in this level are Krashes.

Bouncy Bonanza
Bouncy Bonanza
Bouncy Bonanza is the third level of the mine world, Monkey Mines and the first cave level of the world. Winky can be found again in this level halfway throughout it. The enemies to stop in the Kongs' path in this world are Kritters and Zingers, commonly found enemies in the game. This place, as its name states, features tires as objects for the Kongs to bounce on so they can reach higher areas.

Stop & Go Station
Stop & Go Station
Stop & Go Station is the fourth level of the world, Monkey Mines. It is set in a mining place. A shortcut can be found at the beginning of the level if the Kongs walk left when starting the level, so they can become warped to the end of the level. Enemies here include the invincible Rock Krocs, and some Klaptraps. The Rock Krocs can only be defeated by Donkey Kong's hand slap move in the Game Boy Advance version.

Millstone Mayhem
Millstone Mayhem
Millstone Mayhem is the fifth and final normal level of the world, Monkey Mines. This area appears to be set in a temple and the Animal Buddy, Winky appears for a third time in this world halfway throughout the level to help the Kongs throughout their journey. The enemies here include the Slippas, egg shooting Neckies, and some bouncing and normal Kritters can be found here.
