'''Magnus von Grapple''' (referred to as simply '''Magnus''' in battle and in the Tattle Log) is a robot operated by [[Lord Crump]] in ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'' and [[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)|its Nintendo Switch remake]]. It serves as the boss of Chapter 2.

Magnus von Grapple is activated by Lord Crump in [[the Great Tree]] after he is cornered by [[Mario]], [[Party member#Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door|his partners]], and the [[Puni elder]], and forced to deactivate the time bomb which he had previously activated. After being defeated in battle by Mario and his party, Magnus von Grapple explodes, forcing Lord Crump and the [[X-Naut]]s whom he brought with him to retreat and allowing Mario to claim the [[Emerald Star]], which Crump had stolen.

An upgraded version of the robot, known as [[Magnus von Grapple 2.0]], is fought in the [[X-Naut Fortress]] as the boss of Chapter 7.

==Battle==
Magnus von Grapple's first attack is "Magnus von Punish"; that is, walking up to the party, raising its foot and moving it back and forth over them as if choosing its target, then stomping down on a party member, which deals two points of base damage. It uses this attack on its first turn, and on its every subsequent turn afterwards until its [[HP]] reaches twenty.

After its HP reaches twenty, Magnus von Grapple uses its turn to separate its hands from the rest of its body, causing them to fly using thrusters in front of it in the form of two X-Fist enemies, each of which has 2 HP and, on its turn, flies into a party member in one of two possible trajectories, dealing four points of base damage. If both X-Fists are defeated, a new pair returns to Magnus von Grapple's arms at the beginning of its second turn afterwards, potentially allowing it to release them again immediately. Notably, the X-Fists are guaranteed to be removed from battle by [[Flurrie]]'s [[Gale Force]] with a perfect [[action command]].

While at least one X-Fist is present as an enemy, Magnus von Grapple can only attack by jumping in place and then rapidly stomping the ground repeatedly, shaking it and dealing two points of base piercing damage to both Mario and his partner (other than Flurrie, who is unaffected due to floating above the ground). In the original [[Nintendo GameCube]] version, the damage is dealt while Magnus von Grapple is stomping the ground; in the Nintendo Switch remake, Magnus von Grapple jumps in place one more time after stomping the ground, dealing the damage as it does so. Additionally, in the Japanese version of the Nintendo GameCube game, this attack cannot be [[Superguard]]ed.

After a new pair of X-Fists returns to Magnus von Grapple, it has, every turn until it releases them, a 60% chance to use Magnus von Punish and a 40% chance to release its X-Fists again. Any X-Fists still present when Magnus von Grapple's HP is depleted are instantly defeated.

In this battle, the [[audience]] consists entirely of [[Puny|Punies]] and [[X-Naut]]s, with the former initially taking up the left half of the seats, and the latter initially taking up the right half.
