These enemies wear [[pumpkin|jack-o'-lantern]] helmets that protect them from normal [[stomp]]s, but it makes them move more slowly than typical Goombas. [[Spin]]ning into Jack O'Goombas destroys their jack-o'-lanterns, reverting them into normal Goombas, whereas [[Ground Pound]]s defeat them instantly. They largely occur exclusively in haunted areas similar to [[Ghost House]]s.

 

Though Jack O'Goombas do not appear outside of the ''Super Mario Galaxy'' games, the design of their jack-o'-lantern helmets has appeared on [[Princess Daisy]]'s dress in [[Nintendo]]'s promotional artwork for Halloween 2021, as well as on the faces of the pumpkins during the [[Wonder Effect]] of [[Upshroom Downshroom]] in ''[[Super Mario Bros. Wonder]]''.

Pumpkinhead Goombas made their debut in ''Super Mario Galaxy''. They can be found in the [[Ghostly Galaxy]]. They are capable of producing small blue flames in an attempt to burn [[Mario]] (or [[Luigi]]), yet the ability is lost when their pumpkins are destroyed. In exchange for this, Pumpkinhead Goombas do not chase Mario, unlike normal Goombas, instead just slowly patrolling a small area and making their flames. To break their jack-o'-lantern helmets, Mario must [[spin]]. [[Ground Pound|Ground-pound]]ing a Pumpkinhead Goomba, however, destroys both the pumpkin helmet and the Goomba in one pound. Once the Pumpkinhead Goomba loses its pumpkin cover, it is simply a regular Goomba. If the player ground-pounds a Pumpkinhead Goomba after it just produced a blue flame, Mario will get burned if he touches it. Also, if one tries to jump on one or shoot a [[Star Bit]] at it, the pumpkin will not break. If Mario runs into a Pumpkinhead Goomba as [[Rainbow Mario]], only the pumpkin will break.
