In ''[[Paper Mario]]'', the invisible status is indicated by a speech bubble divided horizontally into black and white segments. A circle is also divided in half into black and white, with the white half on the black background and the black half on the white background. The entire symbol switches shades repeatedly.

The [[Repel Gel]] item will make Mario invisible, and [[Kooky Cookie]]s and [[Strange Cake]]s have a chance to grant this status effect to their consumer.

The player can also use [[Lady Bow]]'s [[Outta Sight]] ability to turn Mario and Bow invisible and avoid enemy attacks for a turn, but this can only be used once every two turns.

The only enemies to give the invisible status to its allies are [[Gray Magikoopa]]s and normal [[Magikoopa]]s.

In ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'' and [[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Nintendo Switch)|its Nintendo Switch remake]], the [[Boo's Sheet]] item replaces the Repel Gel. The indicator in the former game is a semitransparent smiling, blushing face, and a Boo's Sheet icon in the latter. Also, the [[Love Pudding]] recipe has a chance to cause the eater to become invisible. In addition, a [[Boo]] from the audience may appear and pass through anyone in battle, turning them invisible for one turn. The following enemies can turn themselves or their allies invisible: [[Green Magikoopa]]s, Boos, normal Magikoopas, [[Dark Boo]]s, and [[Kammy Koopa]]. Special Moves such as [[Earth Tremor]] and [[Art Attack]] bypass this effect and still damage invisible enemies.

Similar to Lady Bow from the previous game, [[Vivian]] can also help Mario avoid damage from attacks by enemies, by using her [[Veil]] move to pull him into the shadows where they can hide.

[[Princess Peach]], with the help of [[TEC-XX|TEC]], becomes invisible, by creating an Invisibility Potion from other potions (the [[Yellow Potion|Orange]], [[Red Potion|Red]] and [[Blue Potion|Blue]] potions). She reverts to her normal state with the help of the [[Green Potion]]. In contrast with [[Mario]]'s semitransparent appearance, Peach's body is completely invisible to the player (though she has to take off her clothes in order to be unnoticed, as the Invisibility Potion has no effect on them).

In the ''[[Mario & Luigi (series)|Mario & Luigi]]'' series, [[Boo Biscuit]]s are the main way to become invisible since their introduction in ''[[Mario & Luigi: Dream Team]]'', which can render [[Mario]], [[Luigi]], [[Bowser]], and [[Paper Mario (Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam)|Paper Mario]] invincible for a short time. While invisible during battle, the user will not be able to attack until the effect wears off, however, and [[counterattack]]s will not inflict any damage on enemies at all. Thus, its only purpose is to allow the player to practice defending against enemy attacks, without risk of the battle ending from either side being defeated.

In ''[[Mario & Luigi: Brothership]]'', Mario and Luigi no longer become transparent when using Boo Biscuits, though they remain invincible.

While invisible, the hero cannot be directly targeted by enemies, but they can still take damage from attacks, usually by area attacks from hazards and enemies.
