Hungry Lumas tend to appear as part of hidden [[Power Star|Star]] missions; in ''Super Mario Galaxy'', they also appear on the [[Comet Observatory]]. In ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', Hungry Lumas appear on the World Map, and they can be called to [[Starship Mario]]. When [[Mario]] finds a Hungry Luma, he must feed it a certain number of Star Bits or coins, making it larger and larger, until it transforms into a new planet or [[galaxy]]; the transformation is usually permanent, and the resulting planet or galaxy can be visited at the player's leisure. The only Hungry Luma that reverts to its previous form after is the one that transforms into the Tower Planet in the [[Good Egg Galaxy]]; this is done as a part of one of the galaxy's main [[mission]]s, and thus the Luma must be fed 100 Star Bits to transform each time the [[level]] is replayed, since the planet does not remain after the level has been completed. Often, the player is able to travel to the newly created planet or galaxy via a pink [[Launch Star]] right after the Hungry Luma transforms; an exception is the one that transforms into the [[Sea Slide Galaxy#Van-Van Vanish Lv2 Zone|Van-Van Vanish Lv2 Zone]] in the [[Sea Slide Galaxy]], as the planet is accessible by [[cannon]].

Hungry Lumas found throughout individual galaxies usually require a smaller number of Star Bits to transform into planets, while Hungry Lumas that appear on the Comet Observatory or are called to Starship Mario require larger numbers of Star Bits to create entire galaxies. In ''Super Mario Galaxy'', there is a total of seven Hungry Lumas that appear on the Comet Observatory (one outside each [[dome]] and the [[Gate (Super Mario Galaxy)|Gate]]). In ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', seven more Hungry Lumas can be called to Starship Mario from each of the seven [[World#Super Mario Galaxy 2|worlds]]. Both games also feature seven planet-creating Hungry Lumas, for a total of 28 Hungry Lumas.


In ''Super Mario Galaxy 2'', a planet created by a Hungry Luma within a galaxy features a unique background matching the appearance of the Hungry Lumas themselves—a clear pink sky with a hint of a lighter yellow color.
Most of the time Hungry Lumas will also leave a [[Launch Star]] behind for Mario when they transform, allowing him to gain access to the new area. However, in [[Sea Slide Galaxy]] a certain Hungry Luma does not leave a Launch Star behind, forcing Mario to use a [[cannon]] to reach the new planet. The [[Sweet Sweet Galaxy]] and [[Sand Spiral Galaxy]] can both be reached without using the Launch Star via a glitch: after talking to the filled-up Hungry Luma to make the Launch Star appear, [[Flying Mario]] can be used to access the portals instead.

Hungry Lumas reappear in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]'', serving the same purpose as they did in the original. There is one Hungry Luma in every world that can be summoned to the [[Starship Mario]]. After Mario summons them he can feed them a required number of Star Bits to unlock a new galaxy in that world. Hungry Lumas also appear in some of the games galaxies, only now requesting coins instead of Star Bits. These Hungry Lumas will also refuse to be fed unless Mario has the correct number of coins on hand.

*There are a total of seven planet-forming Hungry Lumas as well as seven galaxy-forming Hungry Lumas in both ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]'' and its [[Super Mario Galaxy 2|sequel]]. It is unknown if this was done intentionally or if this is simply a coincidence.
*If the Hungry Luma carries Star Bits/Coins already, than why does it need some from Mario/Luigi? It could be why the Hungry Luma is called a ''Greedy Luma'' in Italian.
