They first appear in ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'' and [[Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3|its reissue]] in general, functioning as the coin equivalent of [[Dotted-Line Block|Dotted Line Block]]s and appearing temporarily when a [[! Switch|switch]] is pressed and changing back when it wears off. Hidden Coins also appear in ''[[Yoshi's New Island]]'', where they behave like in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. Wii]]''.

In ''[[Super Mario Run]]'', Hidden Coins make their first appearance in [[Ghost-Door Deception]]. This time, they appear more commonly than in ''New Super Mario Bros. Wii''. Touching one can reveal a regular coin, a [[Color coin]], or a [[Bonus Medal]], depending on the course and mode. Given the auto-running nature of ''Super Mario Run'', Hidden Coins appear in places where the player can theoretically backtrack to obtain them without a [[bubble]], such as in the horizontally wrapped [[Ghost House]] courses or alongside [[Backflip Block]]s. [[Invincible Mario|Invincible]] characters can reveal Hidden Coins just by being near them, and then obtain the coin or Bonus Medal with the magnetization effect.

Hidden coins return in ''[[Super Mario Bros. Wonder]]'', acting the same as in previous games. Some can also be found as flowers.
