| Hazy Maze Cave, also known as the Hazy Maze Caves, is an underground cave level and the sixth course in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. In both games, the entrance to the course is located in the basement of the Mushroom Castle behind the unmarked ★ door. Inside, there is a room with a small pool in the middle, which is the entrance to the course. The course has many paths and bottomless pits, as well as a large cavern that is home to a giant sea creature named Dorrie. Several maps are also placed on the walls to help the player figure out where they are and where to go.
| |
|
| |
|
| The minigame Dorrie Dip from Mario Party 3, in addition to featuring Dorrie, takes place in an area that resembles this course.

| The area the player starts off in contains a green block and two paths. The one to the right is a hall with several fire geysers that leads to the Hazy Maze and Red Coin area, with the left path having a hall with a large gap the player must long-jump across that leads to the area with the rolling rocks and the Underground Lake. | |
|
| |
|
| Through the door at the end of the left path is a large pit that rolling rocks continuously fall into, as well as a Spinning Heart on the left side of it and a hall to the other end of the course on the right side. This area also contains a Scuttle Bug and a Swoop. Up the ramp the rocks are rolling down is a ledge that holds a Power Star in the N64 version or a 1-UP Mushroom in the DS version, as well as a door that leads to an elevator room. In the elevator room is a ring of coins under a yellow block that holds a 1-UP Mushroom, as well as a Power Star behind a chain fence that can be accessed only through the Hazy Maze. Down the elevator is a large circular lake with Dorrie swimming in the water. There are two doors in this area, with the fenced-off one leading to a Power Star and the door on the ledge that the player has to use Dorrie to reach leading to the Cavern of the Metal Cap (N64)/Behind the Waterfall (DS). This makes Hazy Maze Cave the only course in Super Mario 64 to contain a secret course. In Super Mario 64 DS, this attribute is shared with Big Boo's Haunt and its secret course, Big Boo Battle.
| | Hazy Maze Cave is an underground cave level and course six in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. In both games this course is located in the basement of Princess Peach's Castle. |
|
| |
|
| The door at the end of the right path from the start of the level leads to an open area containing the level's Red Coins and the lifts needed to reach them, as well as several Scuttle Bugs and Mr. I.'s. To the right of the room are an elevator that takes the player to the end of the course and a door that leads to the Hazy Maze. The Hazy Maze is a large maze covered in a strange toxic cloud that damages the player if they stand in it for too long. The maze can lead to two different Power Stars or back into the other room.
| | Hazy Maze Cave is an underground cave. A map can be found in many areas of the course. The course has many hidden ledges, nooks, crannies, and alcoves, countless bottomless pits, and even an underground lake complete with a large but friendly sea monster named Dorrie. |

| ==Missions==
| | The Hazy Maze, the level's namesake, is located deep within the cave. The Hazy Maze is a labyrinth whose passageways are clouded with a highly toxic yellow gas (purple in the remake). Mario's health is slowly depleted the longer he stays in the maze, and he will eventually suffocate if he is unable to get fresh air. To make matters worse, the Hazy Maze is full of Snufits, Monty Moles, and Swoopers that can hinder Mario's progress. Fortunately for Mario, there are small areas of higher ground scattered throughout the maze, a Metal Box (Metal Mario is unaffected by the poisonous fumes), and several escape routes that are clearly marked on the map just outside the entrance. Obtaining certain Stars requires the use of certain escape routes. |
| In Super Mario 64 DS, Wario Caps are available in all missions even if Wario has not been rescued. In the first mission, the cap is found on Dorrie's head, and in all the others, it is on a Goomba near the start.

| |This mission's objective is to collect the Power Star in the cavern by using Dorrie to reach it. In Super Mario 64, Dorrie is required to reach the Star, as the land that the Star is on is elevated off the ground. In Super Mario 64 DS, the ground was lowered to the point that Dorrie is not required, but only Wario can get the Star because it is trapped inside a rock.

| ==Statistics from Super Mario 64==
| | There is a special hidden area in this course called the Metal Cavern that can be accessed through a door near the underground lake. The Metal Cap's ! Switch is located here, along with eight more Red Coins that can be collected to receive one of the castle's Secret Stars. |

| | By going down the right corridor instead of the left upon first entering the level, Mario can access the other side of the course. After leaping over fire pits and avoiding pesky Scuttle Bugs, Mario finds a door at the end of the corridor. Entering it and sliding down a long pole brings Mario to the large underground "plaza" area of the course. In one corner of this area is a staircase formation that leads to an unusual floating platform. This platform has four arrow switches on it, and will move in the direction of the arrow switch that is pressed. Mario must collect the eight Red Coins by navigating a midair obstacle course. Once all eight Coins have been collected, a Star appears at the Star Marker on the floor. |
