| In ''Super Mario Galaxy'', Gringills come in two varieties, being ones in caves and ones that swim freely. Caved ones' behavior also has two variations: Some become visible only if Mario gets close, at which point they emerge and bite whenever he approaches but remain visible in their caves regardless; others constantly emerge, bite, and retract regardless of what Mario does. Free-swimming Gringills always swim in wide, medium-speed loops similarly to the [[Sushi]] enemy in ''[[Super Mario 64]]''. The latter type is the focus of [[Giant Eel Outbreak]], where Mario must defeat three Gringills that are menacing the [[Drip Drop Galaxy]].

Most of them appear in caves, and they come out a small distance when Mario/[[Luigi]] gets close, though rarely they are seen outside their holes, swimming in circles. There are also huge Gringills that are lavender in color, have two feelers on their lower jaws, and are found only in caves. They make a straining noise when coming out of their holes, and give a [[1-Up Mushroom]] when defeated. These huge eels only appear in the Beach Bowl Galaxy, Sea Slide Galaxy, and Deep Dark Galaxy. |
