'''Gramps''' is [[Toad]]'s paternal grandfather, and therefore the father of [[List of implied characters#Moldy|Moldy]], Toad's father. Like the rest of Toad's family, he hails from [[List of implied locations#Fungusville|Fungusville]]. Little is known about his past, except that he was sentenced to serve a sentence of unknown length at [[Koopatraz State Prison]] over fifty-four years before the events of "[[Escape from Koopatraz]]". He is voiced by [[Danny Wells]], the same person who voiced [[Luigi]].

==History==
Fifty-four years before the events of "[[Escape from Koopatraz]]", Gramps was sentenced to [[Koopatraz State Prison]]. After twenty-four years, Gramps came to be Koopatraz's only prisoner for a long time.

Thirty years later, Gramps is introduced to his new cellmates, [[Mario]], [[Luigi]] and Toad. Upon hearing Toad's name, Gramps asks if he is related to the Fungusville Toads, which leads to them discovering that they are grandfather and grandson, and they finally get to hug each other for the first time.

Mario eventually engineers an escape plan from Koopatraz, and after receiving Gramps' advice, he smuggles a few forks out of the mess hall, which the male prisoners use to dig out of their cell with. Unfortunately, this plan leads to Mario getting caught by [[Bowser|Warden Koopa]], who sentences them all to hard labor. However, Mario is able to come up with another escape plan, which involves fooling a [[Goomba]], whose keys he steals to rescue Gramps and the other prisoners.

Gramps and the other prisoners escape from the guards by going down a storm drain, where they pull out a drain stopper underneath Koopatraz Island, slowly causing it to sink. They escape from the sinking island in a boat, where Gramps announces that he is finally a free [[Toad (species)|Mushroom]] again. Mario asks if he was free to buy them all dinner, and Gramps responds by showing him the steel cup and loaf of bread he had smuggled out of the prison mess hall beforehand.
