Her name is a portmanteau of "[[Goomba]]" and "grandma", something she actually notes upon first meeting [[Mario]]. Mario only needs to talk to her once throughout his entire adventure. She, along with the rest of the [[Goomba]] family, lives in [[Goomba Village (location)|Goomba Village]]. Whether Gooma is her grandchildren's maternal or paternal grandmother is unknown.

Gooma writes [[List of letters in Paper Mario#Gooma|a letter]] to [[Goombario]] at one point during the party's adventure, which the player can read at the [[Toad Town Post Office]].
