Gnawties, sometimes referred to as Gnawty Beavers, are walleyed beavers and basic enemies who first appear in Donkey Kong Country. Their name is a portmanteau of the words "gnaw" and "naughty".

Neeks and Sneeks, which are also based on rodents, from Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, respectively, display the same behavior and weaknesses as Gnawties. This is also the case for Awks from Donkey Kong Country Returns and Dozies from Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and more broadly for Goombas from the Super Mario franchise.
Gnawtys are lazy-eyed beavers who are one of the most basic enemies Donkey Kong defeats. Their name is a pun on the word "naughty" and "gnaw".

History
The first appearance of Gnawtys is in the game Donkey Kong Country. Here they are the games most common and weakest enemy. A Gnawty can be defeated by simply jumping on its head, or by throwing a barrel at it or using an Animal Buddy. In a few levels of the game Gnawtys riding giant flying stone wheels named Millstones appear. These wheels will either chase Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong down or act as obstacles. Donkey Kong Country also had two giant Gnawty bosses named Very Gnawty and Really Gnawty. In the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country they are all gray instead of green.

In Donkey Kong Country, Gnawties have a green-gray fur, a light orange belly and tail as well as pink ears, hands and feet. They also have three digits on each limb and two big buckteeth. Although the Gnawty appearing on the original box art is a blue-gray fur, there are none of this color in the game. They are one of the weakest enemies encountered by Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong on their journey, as they simply walk straight ahead and can be beaten by any attack. The sound they make when they are defeated is the same as Diddy Kong's. Gnawties have an undefeatable pink-brown fur variant that moves around while standing in the center of a millstone, comparable to a hamster wheel, and which only appear in the two ruins levels. These Gnawties act differently depending on the level they are in: the millstone-riding Gnawties in Millstone Mayhem move up and down or back and forth more or less quickly on a set path, while the ones in Temple Tempest remain stationary until being passed by the Kongs, whom they proceed to chase on land and in the air at varying speeds along a set path until they encounter a dead-end wall. Additionally, two of the game's bosses are Gnawties, Very Gnawty and Really Gnawty, both of whom requiring more hits to defeat than regular Gnawties. Very Gnawty is green-gray and Really Gnawty is pink-brown, reflecting the colors of both types of Gnawties.

In the game's first remake, the regular Gnawties have a dark green-gray and green color (with one appearing simply green in the end credits), and the millstone-riding ones are red and gold. The millstone-riding Gnawties stand on top of the millstone rather than in its center, and the millstone itself is smaller. Giant Gnawties are also featured in the Buddies Beware stage of the Crosshair Cranky mini-game mode, where they chase several Animal Buddies that Donkey Kong must help to escape by filling in the holes in their path. In addition to their size, these Gnawties stand out from other by a dark gray and orange color. They are the only enemies to appear in this mode alongside Kritters and King K. Rool. In the second remake, all Gnawties have a gray fur, including the millstone-riding variant. However, their photograph in the Scrapbook uses Very Gnawty's original artwork.

Gnawties, called Batty Rats, are enemies in Donkey Kong Land. They appear in most levels, functioning identically as before, though the millstone-riding variant does not return.

Uho'uho Donkey-kun
The next appearance of Gnawtys was in Donkey Kong Country's Game Boy sequel, Donkey Kong Land. Here Gnawtys were once again common enemies.

Gnawties appear in the first volume of the Uho'uho Donkey-kun manga, where they are under the command of King K. Rool and his first subordinate, a larger and more powerful Gnawty simply called "Gnawty". In the first chapter, their appearance is more animal-like than in games. They are part of the forces that attack Diddy Kong and seize the banana hoard, which they then take to Gnawty. Later, they chase Donkey and Diddy who had gone in search of their bananas, but are finally defeated with the help of Rambi.

In the third chapter, they look more like their game counterparts, and their tails become checkered like Gnawty's. They take part in his plan to steal the Kong's bananas by transporting them to the Gnawty's ruins (which is the Japanese name for the Millstone Mayhem and Temple Tempest levels in the game). While Donkey and Diddy have gone there, a Gnawty in a millstone attacks them by passing through a wall. As they are pursued, they jump onto the millstone, following its movement, and dismount it just before reaching a precipice. The Gnawty, too distracted by them to notice it, falls in.
Gnawtys make a reappearance in the Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64. Here they are commonly found in the area Jungle Japes and around Donkey Kong Island. Gnawtys are also, rarely found in the area Crystal Caves. These Gnawtys could be defeated by simply hitting them with any type of attack. Gnawtys serve as the weakest, most easily defeated enemy of the game, and were featured in the K. Rool Arena in Jungle Japes, in "Beaver Brawl". Also, there's an unlockable game in which the player as Rambi the Rhinoceros has to beat as many Gnawtys as possible before the time limit reaches zero. In this game, Gnawties could be found either light blue-colored or gold-colored. The latter awarded a total of ten points. Each time a Gnawty is encountered, it makes a strange, beeping and repetitive sound.

Gnawties (referred to as Beavers by the Prima Games guide and the Banana Guide) are enemies in Donkey Kong 64. They are larger and have light blue fur, a yellow belly and beige ears, hands, feet and tail. Like their two previous appearances, they can be defeated from any attack, including the new abilities introduced in the game. Gnawties are common in Jungle Japes and the surrounding shore of DK Isles, and a few also appear in Crystal Caves. They are the opponents of the game's first Battle Arena stage, Beaver Brawl, located in Jungle Japes. Apart from Kremlings, they are the only enemies to be present in one of these stages. In the area surrounding the Cranky's Lab of Jungle Japes, Gnawties appear to be larger, with one of them being extremely larger. Despite their size, these Gnawties are as weak as regular ones.

Gnawties are the main focus of the Beaver Bother! minigame, where a Klaptrap has to guide a certain number of them into a pit before time runs out. Gnawties also appear in Rambi Arena, where Rambi has to defeat as many Gnawties as possible before time runs out; defeating a Gnawty would reward a point to Rambi. Sometimes a gold Gnawty appears in the arena, and defeating it rewards ten points. Gold and regular Gnawties of multiple sizes also appear at several moments in the game's main menu. A gold Gnawty is present in one segment of the secret ending, appearing behind Dogadon and scaring him.

*A large brown beaver, aptly named Gnawty, appears in the game Banjo-Kazooie in the level Click Clock Wood. Banjo and Kazooie can help Gnawty by destroying a large boulder that is blocking the entrance to his dam. He appears to resemble Very Gnawty from Donkey Kong Country prior to size, height, and color.
