Gnawshers are Chomp-like enemies with wings and golden teeth that chomp through blocks, other enemies, collectibles, or items. Red variants can also be found, where they instead chase enemies or the player, attempting to bite them. They appear prominently in a level with their own name, Gnawsher Lair.
Gnawshers are winged Chomp-like enemies with golden eyes and teeth that chomp through blocks, other enemies, collectibles, or items, hence their name, which is a combination of "gnaw" and "gnasher". While the more common black variants simply travel straight horizontally or vertically, eating anything in their path, red variants would fly around idly until they are close to something that they can consume, be it the player (which would only be damaged instead of immediately devoured), other enemies (except other Gnawshers), or coins, chasing after their chosen prey and switching targets depending on what is closest to them. Gnawshers can be defeated by any form of attack.

During the Wonder Effect in Gnawsher Lair, a horde of Gnawshers chase the player from the left and can be stunned with a Red POW Block.

Their name is a combination of "gnaw" and "gnasher".

Gnawshers appear prominently in a level dedicated to them, Gnawsher Lair. This level features a secret section where a player must defeat five enemies to reveal the level's second 10-flower coin, and one way the player can do it is to lead red Gnawshers spawned from a downward-pointing pipe to Goombrats that may be too high for the player to reach unless equipped with certain badges. Later on in the level, a black Gnawsher can potentially consume the ? Block holding the level's Wonder Flower. If the player is quick enough to get the Wonder Flower before this, the resulting Wonder Effect summons a horde of black Gnawshers from the left, destroying everything in their path (except for certain things like moving platforms). These Gnawshers are invulnerable to damage, but they can be stunned by Red POW Blocks (triggered either by the player or contact with the horde itself), momentarily stopping their advance. Eleven red Gnawshers are also encountered in the second section of KO Arena Magma Flare-Up, where they can be distracted by coins in bubbles generated by pipes in the ceiling, while another horde of black Gnawshers is spawned to chase the player through a crystal section of The Final Test Wonder Gauntlet.
