| The Gateway Galaxy is the first of the many galaxies from Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. It serves as the opening level for the game and after Mario clears its first mission. The galaxy is one of two galaxies (the other one being the Buoy Base Galaxy) to only feature two Power Stars. It is unrevisitable until the Gate is unlocked later on in the game. It has the only Purple Coin mission in the game that can be played before beating Bowser. This galaxy is one of the two galaxies to have a purple coin mission without a Prankster Comet, the other one being the Grand Finale Galaxy. The Gateway Galaxy also contains the only Grand Star not obtained by fighting a boss, as well as the only red Power Star in the game.

| This is the first planet that Mario explores in the game. It is where Mario first wakes up after being blasted off Peach's Castle by Kamek in the opening cutscene. Here, he meets two yellow Lumas as well as an apricot Luma who transform into Star Bunnies and asks him to play hide and seek with them. When they are all found, a large light beam goes down from the sky, and the gateway appears, and it is where Mario meets Rosalina for the first time. The planet itself has three holes in its surface (two of which connect to each other directly through the center of the planet), many small patches of flowers, two connecting Warp Pipes, several rubbery bulbs, two small pools of water, two small cottages, a ring of vertically-positioned rock columns, and a castle-like monument on the top. The planet is also surrounded by a light blue atmosphere. Later in the game, Mario must use the power of the Red Star to collect 100 Purple Coins on this planet, enabling him to use the Red Star onboard the Comet Observatory as well. Rosalina mentions that this planet is dear to her and she looks forward to visiting it with the Lumas every one hundred years.

| A planet found in the Deep Dark Galaxy resembles the Starting Planet of the Gateway Galaxy. It can be seen from the Wooden Planet, as well as the Starting Planet. The planet is accessible via a cannon on the latter, and is much smaller than the original one. There are three Goombas here, and a yellow screw that can be unscrewed by spinning it, which will cause the planet to quickly shrink and disappear, at the same time revealing a large ring of coins.
| |
| | |
| After the credits have rolled, when the player has collected 120 Power Stars and defeated Bowser for a second time, the ending sequence that plays occurs here. In the sequence, Rosalina thanks the player and says that she will watch over them from beyond the stars. She then walks into the door of the small blue-roofed cottage on the planet and comes out of the door of the Gate, thereby revealing that the two are connected. It is also revealed that the Comet Observatory is most likely hidden somewhere on the planet (although it cannot be seen when the player actively explores it), as it emerges from behind the planet after Rosalina transforms it into a comet once again and pilots it away.

| Mario Galaxy, a stage in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, is based on the Starting Planet. | | ===Grand Star Rescue=== |
| | |
| | When Mario awakens on the Starting Planet, an apricot Star Bunny will challenge him to a game of hide-and-seek. The player will have to follow the Star Bunny around part of the planet until he reaches his two friends, after which all three Star Bunnies will run away and hide in various locations around the planet. One is found in a crater near a tree stump and a small pool of water, another in the grass surrounded by Stretch Plants near a Warp Pipe, and the last in the Warp Pipe. When Mario catches one, it will give him a clue as to where the remaining others are. Once the player catches all three of them, a small castle-like structure will appear on the top of the planet. Here, Mario will meet Rosalina, befriend Luma, and then gain the Spinning ability. Mario needs to Spin the nearby Item Crystal which contains a Launch Star that leads him to the Black Hole Planet. Here, Mario talks to a Luma who says that he had another Launch Star all ready for Mario to use, but that it was broken into five Star Chips by meteors. Mario must then collect the scattered Star Chips to reform the Launch Star and progress to the first Metal Planet. |

|
| ===Super Nintendo World===
| | On this planet, a Luma trapped in a cage asks Mario to free it, telling Mario that one of the Goombas on the planet should have the key. The player must then seek out the one Goomba on the planet that is larger than all the others, as only this Goomba has the key (this Goomba will not appear on the planet until the player talks to the trapped Luma). Once freed, the Luma transforms into a Sling Star, which leads Mario to the second Metal Planet. On this planet, Mario must defeat a Grand Goomba near the top of the planet and collect its key to free another trapped Luma on the bottom of the planet (unlike the previous planet, the Grand Goomba will be on the planet regardless of whether or not the player talks to the trapped Luma before freeing it). Mario must then follow the Luma into a Warp Pipe on the bottom of the planet, which takes him to the Flipswitch Area on the inside of the planet. It is filled with yellow Flipswitches and moving electrical platforms. A large machine in the middle of the room holds a Grand Star inside it. Mario must step on all the yellow Flipswitches on the inside of this planet to turn them blue, which will shut the machine down and allow Mario to retrieve the Grand Star. |

| ===Artwork=== | | This mission is only made accessible after the Garden has been unlocked on the Comet Observatory. When Mario enters the galaxy, Rosalina will greet him. A Red Luma notices how much Rosalina trusts Mario, so he gives Mario the challenge of collecting 100 Purple Coins which he has scattered around the planet to earn his trust as well. There are seventy coins located on the planet itself and thirty coins in the air. Mario must use the new Red Star power-up that gives him the ability of flight to reach the thirty Purple Coins floating in the air. Successful completion of this mission will award Mario the game's sole Red Power Star, and also allow him to use the Red Star power-up in the Comet Observatory whenever he wants. |
