They can be used as convenient platforms to get across long stretches of [[Spike Trap|spikes]] or to reach high areas out of reach, mostly in [[World 3-1 (Super Mario Land)|World 3-1]]. [[Hiyoihoi]] also uses Ganchans as projectile weapons in [[World 3-3 (Super Mario Land)|World 3-3]]. Although Ganchans appear as generic boulders, they are living beings.

Ganchans are depicted as both sentient and non-sentient rocks in the [[Super Mario Land (manga)|''Super Mario Land'' manga]]: the sentient Ganchans let [[Mario]] cross the spikes, after [[Mecha Kuribō (character)|Mecha Kuribō]] stretches his face to resemble one of a moai, tricking them into helping them cross; and the non-senient ones are the boulders tossed by Hiyoihoi.

In ''[[Super Mario-kun]]'', faceless Ganchans appear in [[Super Mario-kun Volume 3|volume 3]] being tossed by Hiyoihoi. Mario uses [[Yoshi]] as a shield, making him eat the boulders, then tosses him like a bowling ball at the moai, striking them down.
