Hiyoihoi also uses Ganchan as projectile weapons in World 3-3. Although Ganchan appear as generic boulders, they are living beings.

Ganchans are depicted as both sentient and non-sentient rocks in the Super Mario Land manga: the sentient Ganchans that let Mario cross the spikes, after Mekakuribō stretches his face to resemble one of a moai, tricking them into helping them cross; and the non-senient ones that acts as boulders tossed by Hiyoihoi.

In Super Mario-kun, faceless Ganchans appear in volume 3 being tossed by Hiyoihoi. Mario uses Yoshi as a shield, making him eat the boulders, then tosses him like a bowling ball at the moai, striking them down.
