'''Football Plus''' is a [[Plus Event]] that appears in the [[Nintendo 3DS]] version of ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)|Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games]]''. The objective of the event is to score more goals than the opponent within the time limit. The playable characters in this event are [[Mario]], [[Yoshi]], [[Princess Daisy|Daisy]], [[Sonic]], [[Shadow (character)|Shadow]], [[Jet (Sonic the Hedgehog)|Jet]] and [[Mii]], with Jet being unlocked by beating him in the event on the seventh day of Sonic's story in the Road to Rio mode. Alongside the selected character, the player will also have a team of five other characters, depending on their selected character, as well as a goalie, with [[Pom Pom]] being the goalie for the first team and an [[Egg Pawn]] as the goalie for the second team. The additional team members are [[Toad (species)|Toad]]s for Mario, [[Yoshi (species)|Yoshi]]s for Yoshi, [[Birdo]]s for Daisy, [[Chao]] for Sonic, a variety of Egg Pawn for Shadow, regular Egg Pawns for Jet and either Toads or Chao for Mii, depending on the team members of the opposing team.
==Gameplay==
In this event, the player is shown to have already beaten an opponent and plays a final match against another. The player moves around using {{button|3ds|pad}} or {{button|3ds|stick}}, and can gain a short speed boost by pressing {{button|3ds|R}}. The character that the player controls switches depending on which one is closest to or has the ball. When the player has the ball, they can either shoot it by pressing {{button|3ds|A}}, pass it to a nearby team member by pressing {{button|3ds|B}} or pass it to a further away team member by pressing {{button|3ds|Y}}. Characters that can be passed to and which type of pass to use are indicated onscreen when the player is close enough to the character with an icon of them and the button displayed. As well as the standard shots, over time the main character will charge up a Super Shot, which can be used by the character when they are in possession of the ball by pressing {{button|3ds|X}}. This will cause them to send a fast and powerful shot to the opponent's goal, which will either score or knock down the goalie, making it easier to score. The player scores a point by shooting the ball into the opponent's goal. If the goalie catches the ball, the player can move them and use either {{button|3ds|B}} or {{button|3ds|Y}} to pass the ball back to their team. If the other team has the ball, the player can instead use {{button|3ds|A}} to tackle players on the other team who have the ball. If the player tackles them successfully, they will gain control of the ball, however if the player tackles them incorrectly, they will perform a foul, which results in one of three outcomes. If the foul is committed against the character by their own goal, their team gets a goal kick, where the goalie can freely kick the ball to another player on the team using {{button|3ds|pad}} or {{button|3ds|stick}} and {{button|3ds|B}} or {{button|3ds|Y}}. If the foul happens by the opponent's goal, the other team can perform a free kick, where the character can select one of six areas of the goal to shoot into using {{button|3ds|pad}} or {{button|3ds|stick}} and {{button|3ds|A}}, and can be defended by the goal keeper, who can move to one of three areas to defend the goal. If the foul happens anywhere else on the pitch, the character will have a different type of free kick where they can kick the ball to any other member of their team. Fouls can also be committed by kicking the ball off the pitch, in which case the team that did not kick the ball off gets a throw in, where they can freely throw the ball from the sidelines onto the pitch. For all types of foul compensation, there is a five second time limit on getting the ball back into play. Over time, is a side manages to keep possession of the ball for long enough, a meter will charge which, when full, rewards the side that fully charged it with an item. The charge in the meter drops each time the ball changes possession, but does not completely deplete. Each item is obtained randomly and has a different effect:
*[[POW Block|Knocked over by impact!]]: Knocks over all opponents in the area three times, including the goalkeepers.
*[[Blooper|Ink panic!]]: Obscures the opponent's vision with ink for a limited time.
*[[High Speed|Everyone Speeds Up!]]: Increases the team's speed for a short amount of time.
*[[Barrier (Sonic the Hedgehog)|Goal Blocked by Shield!]]: Prevents the opposing team from being able to score in the goal.
*[[Green Shell|Shots powered up!]]: Increases the power of all shots while the team controls the ball.
*[[Spring (Sonic the Hedgehog)|6-on-1 Chance!]]: Removes all additional teammates except for the goalie from the pitch for a short amount of time.
The player plays two halves in this event, and at the end of both halves, depending on the score, the player may also play up to two halves of extra time before going to a penalty shoot-out to decide the final result.

In this event, the player can set the length of each half of the game to be 2, 4, 6 or 10 minutes.

==Advice==
*Use a Super Shot to leave the goal wide open for you to score.
*Green Shells are reset when taken by an opponent. Shoot them before you lose them.
*You can aim for different sides of the goal by pressing up or down as you shoot the ball.
*The Speed Up item gives you a speed boost, so you can dribble right past the opposition before they can stop you.
