The Floating Jump (sometimes known as the Floaty Jump) is a move that allows characters to hover in midair or to descend slowly during a jump. It is primarily used by Princess Peach, who may sometimes employ her parasol as an airfoil.
The Floating Jump (sometimes known as the Floaty Jump) is a move used mainly by Princess Peach.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros. 2
The Floating Jump first appears in Super Mario Bros. 2, where the player can hold the jump button during a jump to have Peach briefly hover at a certain height. This ability was the result of Super Mario Bros. 2 being a repurposed version of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, with Peach inheriting Lina's abilities, including her jump.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
It first appears in Super Mario Bros. 2, where the player can hold the Jump button during a Jump to have Peach temporarily float a short horizontal distance. The move returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, and Super Mario Run with the same properties.
This move also appears in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury with similar properties to those seen in Super Mario Bros. 2, though with a much shorter gliding time.

Super Mario Run
In later games, such as Super Princess Peach, Yoshi's Island DS, and Super Paper Mario, Peach can use her parasol to float. She also uses her parasol as her up special in the Super Smash Bros. series.

In Super Mario Run, the move works differently, as Peach slowly descends for as long as the screen is held instead of briefly hovering. The nature of this jump means it is the only jump that does not fill the gauge representing how inputs affect jumping in Easy Mode.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
It also appears in Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge, where it appears as Mini Peach's special move. It is performed whenever the toy walks off a platform or a ledge, making her capable of floating across large gaps. This grants Mini Peach access to areas other Minis cannot reach. The move needs to be executed in Level 6 to access Mini Peach's assigned amiibo Door by removing a Long Spring that leads to it. The door leads to Mini Peach's set of levels, Balloon Float Castle, where she makes extensive use of this ability.
In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Toadette can use this move as Peachette in exactly the same manner as Peach does in Super Mario Run.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder
In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Peach does not naturally have access to the Floating Jump. However, all playable characters can equip the Parachute Cap badge, which functions similarly to Peach's Floating Jump from Super Mario Run but uses a cap instead.
Super Smash Bros. series
The move returns in the Super Smash Bros. series as of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Peach's debut in that series. She also uses her parasol as her up special move in the Super Smash Bros. series, where it also slows her fall. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, this move, as well as the parasol, is also present for Daisy, and works in the same fashion as Peach's, due to her being an Echo Fighter of Peach.
Yoshi's Island DS
Baby Peach can perform this move in Yoshi's Island DS using a parasol.
Super Paper Mario
In Super Paper Mario, Peach is able to slowly descend through the air with her parasol.
Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge
The Floating Jump also appears in Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge, where it appears as Mini Peach's special move. It is performed whenever the toy walks off a platform or a ledge. Mini Peach glows pink and floats without falling for a short period. The move ends once Mini Peach reaches another platform, or it times out and has her fall directly downward. This ability grants Mini Peach access to areas on the other side of large gaps that other Minis cannot reach.
The move needs to be executed in Level 6 to access Mini Peach's assigned amiibo Door by removing a Long Spring that leads to it. The door leads to Mini Peach's set of levels, Balloon Float Castle, where it makes extensive use of this ability.
Mario + Rabbids series
In Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Peach performs this jump in her unlock cutscene, and when jumping off high ground in Beacon Beach and entering a new world or MegaDragonBowser's arena if she is in the party.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
In the Nintendo Switch version of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Funky Kong can slowly descend through the air using his surfboard.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Peach performs a Floating Jump as she descends from the Goal Pole of the Training Course.
