| The Flipswitch Galaxy is the smallest galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy, and contains only one mission. The galaxy is composed of 18 Flipswitch Panels which Mario (or Luigi) must step on. After all of them have been turned yellow, a Power Star appears. The background is a scene from Super Mario Bros., as shown in the pictures. They periodically switch between variations of World 2-1 and World 1-2. The level features a Spring Vault that produces circular lasers which can damage Mario. Some Flipswitch Panels are also covered with moving Spike Traps that can hurt Mario. The music used for this galaxy is an arrangement of the underground theme from Super Mario Bros. This music returns in later games, such as Super Mario 3D Land, Super Mario 3D World, and Super Mario Odyssey. | | The Flipswitch Galaxy is a rather small galaxy having only one mission in the game Super Mario Galaxy. The Galaxy is composed of a set of Flipswitches which Mario must step on. After all of them have been touched, a Power Star appears. The background is a scene from Super Mario Bros., as shown in the pictures. Even though the level sounds simple, a robot spawns out circle shaped lasers which can damage Mario. Some Flipswitches are also covered with moving spiked platforms that can hurt Mario. |

| The galaxy can only be unlocked if the player has at least seven Power Stars.

| NOTE: Most planets in Super Mario Galaxy are nameless. Unless otherwise noted, all headers are informal descriptors.

| | | This Planet that Mario starts and ends on is covered in exactly 18 Flipswitches. |
|
| | It contains a Robot that releases circular lasers, some spiked platforms, and a few electrical barriers. Once the player steps on all the flipswitches, turning them yellow, then a Power Star will appear, and the barriers and platforms will be deactivated. |
| The starting planet is the largest planet in the Flipswitch Galaxy and the only accessible one. It is covered in Flipswitch Panels (18 of them exactly) and several hazards such as spiked platforms and electric rails. The platforms and electric rails move around the planet creating hazards for Mario to dodge as he goes through them.

| | ===Block Planets=== |
| | These breakable block planets are seen when Mario is flying to the Flipswitch Planet and can't be reached without hacking. They are made of bricks and look like the blocks in Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros.. These blocks tie in with the scenery after Mario gets the star as the level's background becomes that of a Super Mario Bros. game. |

|
| The only other resident of the planet is a Spring Vault that releases circular shockwaves as Mario goes through the planet. Mario must flip all the Flipswitch Panels from blue to yellow and then, when they are all flipped, they will turn green. Once the Flipswitch Panels are green the laser-shooting Spring Vault will turn into a Trampoline and release a Power Star for Mario to get. The electric barriers and spiked platforms will also be deactivated. | | ==Levels== |

| | ===Painting the Planet Yellow=== |
| | |
| | In this level, Mario needs to step on every blue Flipswitch so that they all wind up being yellow at the same time. There are also some spiked platforms Mario has to cross. After turning all the Flipswitches yellow, they will turn green and the Power Star will appear. Mario then has to use the spring-necked robot on the top of the planet to reach the Power Star. To win Mario must, from the start, go straight down until he reaches the bottom. Then he must go to the side and avoid the spiky platform. After pressing the button that the spiky platform passes over, Mario must ride the spiky platform back up until he has cleared that whole side. He must then methodically clear the top of the planet while avoiding the shock waves from the laser machine. Finally, he must clear the last side of the level which has a much larger expanse of spiky platform than the first side did therefore making it more dangerous. Once Mario has cleared that, he must travel back to the top and use the laser machine to get the Power Star. |

| Before Mario lands on the starting planet, he flies past 49 Brick Blocks floating in space, which cannot be reached other than through hacking. Each of these blocks contains one coin.<ref>The Beaverhouse (January 31, 2010).
