Their name comes from "eggplant," a type of fruit. They also share their name with a type of nightshade (hence the appearance). Egg Plants normally spit out normal [[Yoshi's Egg]]s, and they are very common and appear in almost every [[level]] in their respective games. They spit out eggs one at a time, but if a Yoshi [[Ground Pound|ground-pound]]s near one, the plant will either shoot out several at once or start shooting them out more quickly. The [[Yoshi (species)|Yoshi]] can also lick the eggs to catch them. Since the Yoshi can carry only six eggs each, the Egg Plant does not produce any more eggs until the Yoshi uses one of them on something.

[[Sanbo Flower]]s are a variation on Egg Plants that spit out [[Pokey (projectile)|Pokey projectile]]s.  

An unused variation that spits out Bubbles was intended to appear, but it was removed for unknown reasons.<ref>{{cite|author=TCRF|title=[[tcrf:Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island#Unused Sprites|Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island § Unused Sprites]]|publisher=The Cutting Room Floor|accessdate=August 26, 2018|language=en}}</ref> Like the [[Bull's-Eye Bill|Missile Bill]], it is fully functional.

An Egg Plant appears in volume 14 of ''[[Super Mario-kun]]'', where it helps [[Mario]], [[Yoshi]], and [[Luigi]] by providing eggs in their fight against [[Burt the Bashful]].

In ''[[Yoshi's Woolly World]]'' and ''[[Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World]]'', Egg Plants are knitted from yarn, befitting the style of the games. Egg Plants do not have eyes. Since [[yarn ball]]s replace eggs, Egg Plants shoot out yarn balls instead. The yarn balls' colors vary. A Ground Pound causes them to spit out enough yarn balls to fill Yoshi's inventory to its current maximum all at the same time, fanning outward but staying in one row. If a yarn ball from an Egg Plant lands on the ground, it will bounce into the foreground and out of the course. If the [[Poochy Pup]]s are being used, then Egg Plants do not create yarn balls. Egg Plants appear less frequently in the game, with only a few appearances, including the [[Bonus Game (Yoshi's Woolly World)|Bonus Game]].

Egg Plants reappear in ''[[Yoshi's Crafted World]]'', where they appear more frequently. One of them is set on a flowerpot in the course [[Deceptive Doors]], and in the [[Jungle Tour Challenge]], two Egg Plants are set on the train.
