Egg Pawns are a crossover species from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and one of Dr. Eggman's many creations. Egg Pawns in the Super Mario franchise appear only in the Mario & Sonic series, beginning with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Egg Pawns usually appear within Dream Events, but they do appear as extra team members in certain events that require larger team sizes.

History
In the Mario series, however, Egg Pawns appear acting as obstacles in some of the Dream Events of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. In the Wii version of Dream Race, two of them are walking in the middle of the circuits, blocking other players. When a player runs into them, at the slightest touch, they will explode, stunning the player for a second. This also greatly decreases his/her speed, and he/she has to gain speed all over again. After one has exploded, they are soon replaced after another lap is complete. They appear as targets in the DS-exclusive Dream Shooting, along with Kikis and Flappers
