The player can still obtain extra time or bubbles, but that has no meaning when both counters are locked at infinity. A bar is displayed to the left of the player. Any coins collected in courses completed with Easy Mode are not saved, and neither are enemies defeated to [[level up]] that enemy. If Mario needs to collect [[Power Moons]] in general, rather than a specific Power Moon, Assist Mode points the player to [[Hint Toad]], then points toward the nearest Power Moon revealed on the map. If Mario returns to a prior kingdom but needs to go to the next kingdom, then Assist Mode does not show any arrows.

The modes can be swapped between at nearly every point in the game, except for while Yoshi is transformed. Yoshi starts courses with 20 {{id|heart|item}}s in their [[Health Meter|health display]] instead of ten. Note that this effect applies on course entry, meaning swapping modes mid-course does not update Yoshi's current health. Every source of hearts in the game creates twice as many hearts. Additionally, bosses drop hearts when they take damage for the first two times in their boss battle, except for [[Mega Baby Bowser]] who does so at a more specific point. Yoshi becomes [[Winged Yoshi]], which makes them [[fly]] instead of [[Flutter Jump|flutter-jumping]]. This flight has the same undulating motion as a Flutter Jump, but the player can hold {{button|wiiu|A}} to continuously fly whereas the player cannot continuously flutter-jump without correctly timed button presses. After flying, Yoshi falls slower. The aiming cursor for [[Egg Throw|throwing]] [[yarn ball]]s moves slower. When Yoshi is transformed, he has a maximum of 30 seconds to complete the area rather than 20 seconds. If Yoshi fails a course five times without leaving that course in between each attempt, an [[Invincibility Egg]] appears for them to use. It prevents Yoshi from taking damage and being eaten by enemies, though does not protect them from hazards that defeat them instantly. Lastly, Yoshi can use the "Clear the course!" {{id|Power Badge|YWW}} to skip a course.

In {{a|P&YWW}}, Mellow Mode receives a couple extra changes. Whenever Yoshi takes damage, he only loses one heart instead of five. The [[Poochy Pup]]s follow Yoshi, replacing Yoshi's yarn balls. While Yoshi cannot pick up yarn balls with the Poochy Pups around, the Poochy Pups are superior to yarn balls as Poochy Pups are reusable projectiles. The Poochy Pups can also reveal secrets, fight some enemies, and generally guide the player. A button on the Touch Screen can be used to put the Poochy Pups away or call them out again, reverting to normal yarn ball based gameplay when the Poochy Pups are not present.
