'''Dream Events''' are events in the [[Mario & Sonic (series)|''Mario & Sonic'' series]] that are loosely based on Olympic [[Event]]s and prominently feature elements from both the ''[[Super Mario (franchise)|Super Mario]]'' and {{wp|Sonic the Hedgehog (series)|''Sonic the Hedgehog''}} series as part of the event. This often includes items being used or enemies and obstacles appearing in the event. The events take place either in existing places from the two series or in new locations created for the games. The events are unlockable in the first two installments (aside from [[Dream Snowboard Cross]] or [[Dream Ski Cross]] in the Wii version of ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)|Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games]]'') but are available from the start in the third and fourth ones.


Dream Events do not appear in either of the Rio 2016 installments, but are replaced by [[Duel Event]]s in the [[Wii U]] [[Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)|version]], and [[Plus Event]]s in the [[Nintendo 3DS]] [[Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)|version]]. However, they return in the [[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020|Tokyo 2020 installment]].
Dream Events also make a reappearance in the sequel, ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games]]''. They, as the ones before, contain fictional and abstract features as the ones before. They also need to be unlocked in order to play them. In the 3DS version of ''[[Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)|Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games]]'', Dream Events are known as Plus Events. Unlike previous games, they do not take place in locations from the ''Mario'' and ''Sonic'' series. Instead, elements from those series are placed in the event instead (ex., In 100m Freestyle Swimming Plus, a Thwomp creates waves that need to be avoided on the first length and can be ridden on in the second length). Unlike Dream Events which are named "Dream Race" for example, each Plus Event isn't named "Plus 100m," instead it is named "100m Plus." In the [[Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)|Wii U version]], instead three Duel Events appear in the game. Duel Points are earned by tackling, spiking or shooting and items from the Mario & Sonic series can be used. To add them to the player's score, they have to score a try, point or goal.
