The '''Cursed Mushroom''' is an item that appears in certain games of the [[Mario Party (series)|''Mario Party'' series]]. It is a purple-capped, teal-spotted [[Mushroom]] with "angry eyes" that reduces a character's maximum roll on the [[Dice Block]] for one turn. It closely resembles the [[Poison Mushroom]], particularly the Poison Mushroom's appearance as the Poisonous Mushroom that can appear on a [[Mushroom Space]] in ''[[Mario Party]]'', but it has a different effect, is described as cursing the recipient of its effect rather than poisoning them, and it has a different name in both Japanese and English, except for the English localization of ''Mario Party 3''.

The Cursed Mushroom's effect is similar to that of [[Shy Guy]]'s Curse House, a shop that appears in [[Mystery Land]] in ''[[Mario Party 2]]''. The [[Creepy Dice Block]] is a similar item that appears in later games of the ''Mario Party'' series. The [[Mini Mushroom#Mario Party 4|Mini Mushroom]], [[Halfway Dice Block]], and [[Slowgo Candy]] also resemble the Cursed Mushroom in effect, though to a lesser extent.

The Cursed Mushroom first appears in ''[[Mario Party 3]]'', though it is known as the '''Poison Mushroom''' in the English localization. In this game, it is an item that can be obtained on an [[Item Space]] or bought for 5 [[coin]]s at [[Item Shop (Mario Party series)#Mario Party 3|Baby Bowser's Joint]]. When used, the player can select any one player (including themself or an opponent); that player's maximum roll is reduced to 3 the next time they roll the Dice Block, in place of the usual 10. An identical effect is granted to all players by the Bowser's Curse event that can occur on [[Bowser Space]]s.

The effects of the Poison Mushroom can be negated if the cursed player uses a regular Mushroom, a [[Super Mushroom#Mario Party series|Golden Mushroom]], a [[Warp Block]], or a [[Genie Lamp|Magic Lamp]]. However, the player can simultaneously be affected by a Poison Mushroom and a [[Reverse Mushroom]].

The Poison Mushroom is [[Waluigi]]'s favorite item in this game.

The Cursed Mushroom reappears in ''[[Mario Party 5]]'', receiving its current English name. It reappears in the main board game mode as a usable [[Orb|capsule]], the '''Cursed Mushroom Capsule'''. Like other capsules, it is mainly received from [[capsule machine]]s. A player can use it on themself for 5 coins, or throw it onto a space for free. When used or activated, the Cursed Mushroom Capsule grants the player a Cursed Mushroom, which reduces their maximum roll to 5 the next time they roll the Dice Block. Its effects can be negated by using a different movement-altering capsule, such as the [[Mushroom#Mario Party series|Mushroom Capsule]] or [[Bullet Bill Orb|Bullet Bill Capsule]].

The Cursed Mushroom also appears as an Item Card in the [[Card Party]] game mode. In this mode, its effect is more similar to the effect it had in ''Mario Party 3''. When used, a roulette wheel appears containing spaces for each of the player's opponents; whichever opponent is selected by roulette has their next maximum dice roll reduced to 3, in place of the usual 6. A Cursed Mushroom can also be given to the player by [[Koopa Kid]] at a Bowser Card, reducing that player's next roll.

Finally, the Cursed Mushroom appears as a randomly-spawning item in [[Super Duel Mode]]. When collected, it reduces the speed and control of the player's machine for a short time, the reverse effect of the standard Mushroom.

Rather than being negated by regular Mushrooms and similar items, the player cannot use Orbs that affect their movement at all while the Cursed Mushroom is active in this game.
