Crystal Balls in the ''Super Mario'' franchise are first seen in ''[[Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic]]'' and ''[[Super Mario Bros. 2]]''. They appear at the end of most levels, and picking one up opens the [[Mask Gate]] and either unlocks the next level or, in the case of boss levels, the chamber where the boss is fought. Crystal Balls are usually guarded by [[Birdo]]. In original releases, Birdo can be seen holding the Crystal Ball in front of her, but in remakes of ''Super Mario Bros. 2'', it appears from her snout upon being defeated.

A Crystal Ball is used by [[Madame Clairvoya]] in ''[[Luigi's Mansion]]'' to see into the future. When Luigi shines his [[flashlight]] on the Crystal Ball continuously, it lights up with a pitch-increasing shimmering noise, eventually ending once Clairvoya appears.

In ''[[Mario vs. Donkey Kong]]'', [[Mini Mario (toy)|Mini-Mario]]s are encased in crystal balls after they are produced. In the first six worlds of the game, a Mini-Mario is trapped in a crystal ball at the end of the world's first six levels. The Mini-Mario must be freed by Mario, who picks up the crystal ball and throws it against the [[Fourth wall|game screen]] to shatter it. The [[Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Nintendo Switch)|remake]] makes the crystal balls look more capsule-like.
