Crystal Balls in the Super Mario franchise are first seen in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2. They appear at the end of most levels, and picking one up opens the Mask Gate and either unlocks the next level or, in the case of boss levels, the chamber where the boss is fought. Crystal Balls are usually guarded by Birdo. In original releases, Birdo can be seen holding the Crystal Ball in front of her, but in remakes of Super Mario Bros. 2, it appears from her snout upon being defeated.

Paper Mario series
The Crystal Ball is an item that has been featured in many games throughout the Mario series. It was first seen in Super Mario Bros. 2. Birdo spits it out after being defeated, and grabbing it opens the Hawkmouth to the next level. Years later it's seen again in Paper Mario as the main magic tool for Merlon's family, there's also the red crystal ball, the Ultra Stone, for Ultra ranking Mario's partners. The Ultra Stone is also seen with Merlon in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
They are seen in Paper Mario as the main magic tool for Merlon's family. Merlon's crystal ball resembles a Star Point with eyes and uses it to predict Mario's future actions. There is an Ultra Stone variant given by Raphael the Raven in the Jade Jungle. For one of Koopa Koot's favors, Mario must retrieve a crystal ball from Merlee and give it to Merluvlee in exchange for her autograph. It is also seen with Merlon in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

In Super Paper Mario, when Chapter 5 is complete, the player can go see Merlee at Flopside. She claims that she wants a Crystal Ball from Merluvlee, and wishes the player to go get it for her. After doing the task, Merlee rewards the player with a free charm and a key that opened a storehouse containing Piccolo the Pixl.
Madame Clairvoya used it to see the furture, and other things in Luigi's Mansion. It was seen once more in Mario Party 6, in the Seer Terror mini-game. Bowser used to see a player's "future" which usually was something bad. Occasionly, however, the player received Coins or a Mushroom. All of this was just for fun however, and had no effect on gameplay.

A Crystal Ball is used by Madame Clairvoya in Luigi's Mansion to see into the future. When Luigi shines his flashlight on the Crystal Ball continuously, it lights up with a pitch-increasing shimmering noise, eventually ending once Clairvoya appears.

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mini-Marios are encased in crystal balls after they are produced. In the first six worlds of the game, a Mini-Mario is trapped in a crystal ball at the end of the world's first six levels. The Mini-Mario must be freed by Mario, who picks up the crystal ball and throws it against the game screen to shatter it. The remake makes the crystal balls look more capsule-like.

Game & Wario
In Game & Wario, three Crystal Balls appear as Cluck-A-Pop prizes.
