Cosmic Clones are shadowy duplicates of Mario or Luigi that first appeared in Super Mario Galaxy 2. They copy Mario or Luigi's every move, even his death animation if he loses a life. They appear to be a successor to Cosmic Mario: They are strikingly similar to it, sharing the same voice as it, and their theme is the Cosmic Comet theme from Super Mario Galaxy (a semitone higher pitch and an edited opening section, which in turn is a cover version of the Ground Theme and Underground Theme from Super Mario Bros. The only difference is their color and the Cosmic Clones' glowing yellow eyes.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Cosmic Clones are created once a certain point is reached in a galaxy and follow behind Mario or Luigi, mimicking every movement he makes. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, Cosmic Clones are created once a certain point is reached in a galaxy and will follow behind Mario or Luigi, performing every movement the plumbers make. Boards usually warn the plumbers that Cosmic Clones are present in the area, although they also appear when a Clone Comet orbits a galaxy.

Cosmic Clones mimic whatever Mario or Luigi does, even if the landscape has recently been changed. For example, they can jump on a platform where Mario or Luigi was standing, even if it has disappeared or moved. If Mario or Luigi gets hit by a clone, he receives damage and the clone vanishes, with the rest of the clones then mimicking the player character taking damage. Once the way forward is revealed, the clones scream, disappear, and release three Star Bits each.
Cosmic Clones will mimic whatever Mario or Luigi does, even if the landscape has recently been changed. For example, they will still appear to jump on a platform even if the platform had disappeared after plumbers used it. If Mario or Luigi get hit by a clone, they receive damage and the clone vanishes, with the rest of the clones then mimicking the plumber taking damage. Once the way forward is revealed, the clones disappear screaming loudly for a few seconds and leaving behind three Star Bits each.

The following table provides information on Cosmic Clones in each of their locations.
Super Mario 3D Land
A Cosmic Clone appears only in the Special Worlds in Super Mario 3D Land, and it resembles Small Mario. Regardless of which character encounters a Cosmic Clone, it will always have Mario's voice, and resembles Mario's body and hair more than Luigi's, suggesting that the Cosmic Clone is resembling Mario only. A big Cosmic Clone's voice has a low pitch, and it is twice the size as its usual. It can also destroy Brick Blocks upon contact. It seems to conduct the same tactics as Cosmic Mario, with the addition of it attacking Mario if he gets in its way, it has a purple outline instead of a red one, and only one appears instead of a group. Mario or Luigi can destroy it by touching it while invincible; normal-sized clones give three coins upon destruction, and large ones give ten. Upon reaching a certain area, the Cosmic Clone disappears. If the player leaves that area, the Cosmic Clone will appear again, even if it has been destroyed with a Star.

Mario Party: Island Tour
Cosmic Clones return in Mario Party: Island Tour, under the reference to Bubble Clones. These look nothing like they do in the other two games. These will also not mimic Mario at all. These also appear as CPU's in the minigame Claiming the Cube.

Only the first clone uses voice clips when jumping. If the player is hurt by the first Cosmic Clone, the other ones only play sound effects.

*Special 1-2 (Regular)
Cosmic Clones appear in the Special Worlds of Super Mario 3D Land, where they resemble Small Mario. Regardless of which character encounters a Cosmic Clone, the clones always resemble Mario's appearance more than Luigi's. They act as they do in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but they have a purple outline instead of a red one, and only one appears instead of a group; this one does not vanish if Mario or Luigi touches it. Mario or Luigi can defeat the Cosmic Clones by touching them while invincible or by touching the level's Goal Pole; they give three coins upon defeat. Upon the player reaching a certain area (normally the level's halfway point), the Cosmic Clone disappears. If the player leaves that area, the Cosmic Clone appears again, even if it has been defeated with a Super Star.
*Special 4-2 (Regular)

*Special 5-2 (Regular)
This game also introduces Big Cosmic Clones, which have a slower and lower-pitched voice and are four times as big. They can also destroy Brick Blocks on contact, and they give ten coins when defeated.
*Special 6-4 (Regular)

*Special 7-2 (Regular)
The clones' theme music is the same as in Super Mario Galaxy 2, albeit with most of the fading cosmic synth pads removed.

*The Cosmic Clone's theme is a remix of the Super Mario Bros. overworld and underground theme, like Cosmic Mario's (or Cosmic Luigi's) theme from Super Mario Galaxy. Additionally, it is a Shadow Comet theme with a half-step higher pitch, with an added opening section.

*Cosmic Clones also share their voice clips with Cosmic Mario and Cosmic Luigi: they have a high-pitched voice that is strikingly similar to Shadow Mario's.
*Only the first clone will make noises when jumping. If the player is hurt by the first Cosmic Clone, the other ones will not make any noises.
*Cosmic Clones are very similar to Bad Rayman from the Rayman series, both are dark versions of the character, and both copy their every move.
