If Mario falls off certain areas of the game, such as the concert stage during the New Donk City Festival and the Floating Island in the Luncheon Kingdom, he is placed in a bubble and returned to the where he fell from. More specific situations may return Mario to a default point instead. This is similar to the transparent sphere from the Comet Observatory in Super Mario Galaxy and the credits in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

In Assist Mode, bubbles are a prominent element. If Mario falls into a pit, touches poison that defeats him instantly, or touches lava, and he has more than one health point, a bubble will carry Mario back to the last stationary platform he was standing on while taking away one health point. If Mario only has one health point, then the bubble does not appear and Mario dies. This can also occur in 8-bit areas, so bubbles have an appearance specifically for those and Mario uses the crouching sprite while inside. Certain areas of the game, usually those involving all nearby ground collapsing, do not allow bubbles to rescue Mario in this manner.
