A '''Boss Sumo Bro''' is an enlarged [[Sumo Bro]] who first appears in ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]''. He appears to wear two {{wp|Glossary of sumo terms#tsuna|tsuna}} around his shoulders, the ceremonial rope typically worn by yokozuna sumo wrestlers around their waists.

In ''[[New Super Mario Bros. U]]'', a Boss Sumo Bro awaits in the second tower located in [[Rock-Candy Mines]]. Boss Sumo Bro was a regular [[Sumo Bro]] until [[Kamek|Magikoopa]] transforms him, somewhat changing his appearance and greatly increasing his size. He is battled in [[Screwtop Tower]].

In battle, Boss Sumo Bro jumps between the platforms in the room, stomping them to make electric waves below him in attempt to damage the player. Stomping the ground makes it shake for a few seconds, which may stun the player. Sometimes, he stomps the floor twice.

To defeat him, the player has to jump and hit the bottom of the platform where Boss Sumo Bro stands, causing him to fall on the back of his shell. While Boss Sumo Bro is stunned, the player must jump on him. He or she must to do this three times to defeat him. The [[Note Block]]s in the room are quite useful for this because it is impossible to stomp on his head due to the spike.

Boss Sumo Bro reappears in ''[[New Super Luigi U]]'', having the same role from the original game. He is found in his new tower, [[Sumo Bro's Spinning Tower]].

A Boss Sumo Bro. appears as a boss in ''[[Paper Mario: The Origami King]]'', having been [[Folded Soldiers|folded]] into origami by [[King Olly]]. He is found on a large thundercloud in front of the entrance to [[Bowser's Castle]], forcing [[Mario]], [[Olivia]], [[Kamek]], and [[Bowser Jr.]] to investigate, using the latter's [[Junior Clown Car]] as transport.  

When the battle starts, The Boss Sumo Bro. has moved to a smaller thunderclound, and six regular [[Sumo Bro]]s appear also on thunderclouds. Four of them will dismount and steal On, +1, [[Fire Vellumental]], and Attack icons from the battle rings, and taking them to the center. The other two Sumo Bros. will then use Thunder Guard, electrifying the two spaces in front of them and making them unsafe to walk on. Mario can attack the Sumo Bros. on foot by ending up in front of them, and must get back the icon they are holding by defeating them. If Mario is not in front of a Sumo Bro, Jump attacks will hit the Boss Sumo Bro. and Hammer attacks will do nothing. If the Fire Vellumental is used, it instantly defeats the enemies on the ground.  

As per usual, Boss Sumo Bro. and his minions cannot be jumped on (except with the [[Iron Boots]]), but he can be hit with anything else without an issue.

When the Boss Sumo Bro. and Sumo Bros. in the air attack, they use Thunder. However, if Mario has used the [[Earth Vellumental]] prior, he will completely avoid it.

After all the Sumo Bros. on foot are defeated, the remaining enemies will dismount, the Sumo Bros. stealing both Vellumental spaces, and the Boss Sumo Bro. charging up Heavy Thunder, which does 40 damage, but can also be avoided using the Earth Vellumental. Additionally, the Fire Vellumental will instantly defeat the enemies.

The boss has the same appearance to that of a regular Sumo Bro, except that he wears two towels on his shoulders, his eyes appear to be dash-like and slanted, he has a ring around his spike, and he is larger than the average Sumo Bro.
