This galaxy pits the player against five bosses that previously appeared in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]''. The player faces off against [[Dino Piranha]], [[King Kaliente]], [[Major Burrows]], [[Bouldergeist]] and the fiery Dino Piranha, in that specific order. It contains six planets surrounding a white dwarf star. With the exception of the egg phase of both Dino Piranhas' boss fights, as well as the first phase of Major Burrow's boss fight, all five bosses have their original battle themes from ''Super Mario Galaxy''.

This [[UFO]]-like planet is where Mario must face [[King Kaliente]]. The planet has the same appearance as it did in ''Super Mario Galaxy'', with the addition of both the [[Comet Medal]] and a [[Life Mushroom]] hidden under the battlefield. The planetoid itself is an exact replica of the planet found in the [[Gusty Garden Galaxy]] in ''Super Mario Galaxy'', except that Major Burrows is not chasing a [[Star Bunny]]. While the [[Ghostly Galaxy]] is encountered before [[Gusty Garden Galaxy]] in the original game, in this galaxy, [[Bouldergeist]] is instead fought after Major Burrows.

This planet is where the player must face Bouldergeist. Little has changed from the original in ''Super Mario Galaxy'', with a checkpoint flag placed near [[Lumalee]]. To get the [[Power Star]], the player has to defeat all of the five bosses. They will begin by landing on top of Dino Piranha's egg. The player must defeat the oversized [[Piranha Plant]] just as in the prequel. After being defeated, Dino Piranha will turn into a Launch Star. This Star will shoot Mario towards King Kaliente. He is defeated the same way as in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy]]''. Underneath King Kaliente's planet is a [[Life Mushroom]] and the galaxy's [[Comet Medal]]. A Launch Star will appear by the pool of lava, which will shoot the player to duel with Major Burrows. Unlike the first game, when Mario lands on the planet, Major Burrows is moving, yet he is not chasing anything at the start. He is fought just as in the first game. When he is defeated, another Launch Star will appear, which will send Mario to fight Bouldergeist. Just before the fight, there is Lumalee and a [[Midway Point|Checkpoint Flag]]. Bouldergeist is fought just as in ''Super Mario Galaxy'', and when defeated, will turn into a Launch Star. This Star sends Mario to a very small icy planet with another Launch Star. This Launch Star is needed to crack Fiery Dino Piranha's egg. When the last boss, [[Fiery Dino Piranha]], is defeated, the [[Power Star]] will appear.

The last Green Power Star is located below the edge of the Bouldergeist planet, into the abyss. The player must simply head over to the backside of the circular arena while avoiding the Boltergeist's attacks. The player needs to carefully slide down the edge of the arena into the Green Star. If the player misses the Green Star, or tries to get it with a long jump, Mario will be stretched into the [[Black Hole]].

The last Green Star is located below the edge of the Bouldergeist planet, into the abyss. The player must simply head over to the backside of the circular arena while avoiding Bouldergeist's attacks. The player needs to carefully fall off the back of the arena in order to land on the Green Star. Another option is to defeat Bouldergeist first before obtaining the Green Star. This will easily ensure the player the star without the hassle of avoiding Bouldergeist's attacks.
